Love my CKs, somewhat despise my CAs, and I think I caught the DR bug. Making a deal on facebook marketplace for a DR1 for 20 bucks. Hoping to get another somewhat cheap. The current owner says it doesn't work because they think it overheated. I'm hoping that means they stopped using it because the condenser got hot...

Thanks David. Yup, I'm pretty eager to see. Right now, I have my DR1 bringing my freshly restored cabinet's temperature down, so I get to see how well it works (having been off with the oil conditioner/heater on for the past week).

That’s awesome. Be nice to the DR’s or you’ll go to jail for elder abuse! 😉

That’s awesome. Be nice to the DR’s or you’ll go to jail for elder abuse! 😉 I just knew you were going to say something like that. Don't worry, my DR1 will NOT see outdoor service. At least not after spending nearly $600 just to restore the cabinet, not to mention my time. Right now, it's cooling Texas tea, Yuengling beer and fresh goat's milk that came out of my goats 20 minutes ago. That should be a good test for the fridge, given that fresh raw goat's milk is over 100 degrees. I too just recently caught the DR bug. In fact I haven't had a Monitor Top in 30 years. These things are hard to find in Tennessee. When one turned up on FB Marketplace locally I grabbed it. Now I have the worlds largest paperweight... : \ They're hard to find here in Texas, too, let alone any DRs. Lots of non-working CAs, though. Where is your avatar taken? Almost looks like my university (University of Tennessee Martin, but online). I forgot to ask everyone. There's someone in Northern California with what could be a 2 door DRA. If anyone wants pictures, let me know. It's one of those "It came with the house, I just want it gone, but I don't want to send it to the dump" sorta deals. I'm going up to Nor Cal in a week to pick up another DR1 anyways.

I was more concerned about your $20 one. I still think you should brave the liberals in San Fran for that $50 DR1.

And yes, I'm not wild about the trip to San Fransisco because of the liberals. That's the number one reason why I left California in the first place. Though I won't lie - I've got some nice MTs from there.

A DR3? www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2149204705321052I got a DR bug after a $45, rusty double door DR3 landed in my lap just before it headed out for scrap, and just as I happened to have a moving truck handy. It's what launched my deep study into the workings of the DR, study of alternate refrigerants, and four other DRs joining it in my garage to await repair or restoration (alongside the CK and flat top). So if you have the muscle and are out in the area, I'd definitely grab that rusty DR3. If it doesn't work, it's an opportunity to learn about their inner workings to fix it. And if you do pick up and end up not wanting it, I'll buy it off you

Wow that’s a shame it’s setting out in the weather like that, not even under the tent .

Wow that’s a shame it’s setting out in the weather like that, not even under the tent . It looks like it has been sitting out for years. Mine was like that too. Nevertheless, it's surprising how resilient they are. GE did subject them to water/flooding, fire, etc and they still ran

I need to find a timeline she'll have it there for. I have a feeling it might not fit on my 5x10 trailer, but if I can bring out a different trailer on a different trip, I'll gladly pick it up.

I've thought about that. I thought about my shitty Harbor Freight engine hoist, though I don't know how useful that'll be. I"m sure I'll have to build a custom crate for the top on-site, though (nothing I can't handle with a mitre saw and diesel generator).

Paul,
I doubt that an engine hoist has the height needed to lift a DR3. Ray has an engine hoist that may have come from HF and that's an issue. My homemade lift that was built for an 8 ceiling is too short. I think the overall height is 66". The only way I have seen them moved in one piece is with a pallet jack or similar.
All of the 2 and 3 series machines have the same size deck. If you have a frame for a CA2 to sit on, I'd take it for use with the DR3.

A 2-ton harbor freight hoist handled our DRB3 just fine with some breathing room, but a 1-ton is way too short. The seller of our DR3 had a small forklift, which we used to lift the top off the cabinet (and into its crate), and lift the cabinet into the truck. The unit itself is 280 lbs, and the cabinet is probably somewhere in the 400-500 range.
As far as the price of the unit, it is kind of a gamble. This one looks quite rough. If it is intact (has its evaporators, control, transformer block, wires, coils and they're not obviously perforated with corrosion), then it's at least possible it could be restored. I'd assume the windings don't have much life left in them, and would be very pleasantly surprised if it wasn't seized or had a plugged float. So the $150 purchase price is really a kind of upper limit from the seller (before transport costs), it might be worthwhile to try negotiating them down to $75 or $100. It's a "this looks like a fun project that may or may not end up with a working refrigerator, what is the most I'd pay before is no longer fun" sort of thing.
But if it is actually convenient for you to get it, then getting some more information from the seller might be worth it, at least to see if there is something to work with.
