Have any new thoughts come up on this subject. I know people are busy but if nothing is done then we are doomed to fail . (Ideas) !!!! One idea floating around is to use Amazon S3 to host the images; that can cheaply handle much more image data than we have. There are a few tricky questions to answer about security. We've also secured the monitortop.org domain name, which could be helpful. This past week I wrapped up the killer project that has been consuming all my time since October. I'm off on a road trip vacation the the next two weeks, but hopefully will return refreshed enough to explore the S3 approach and whip up a proof-of-concept of some sort.

I didn’t even know that amazon could host images. I like that idea.

That would be great Birkie. You’re efforts are greatly appreciated!

That sounds fun, maybe Jeff Bezos can sell us access to them at a later date. LOL.
In all sincerity, I look forward to a better organized forum with some areas locked down as reference material. I love this forum and all the members, but a few of you just like to post bs. Those of you that are most special are in my phone!

I know we discussed this earlier, but as a temporary, and easy solution for some members, is there a payable fee to increase memory for photos? If not for this forum I would of been unable to rewire and re fan my fridge. Or even have a clue of its historic importance.
I'd be happy to chip in if its a reasonable amount.

Stlvortac. I thank you for wanting to contribute . But from my understanding it would be a temporary fix . Maybe one of the administrators can explain it better!

Yes, it would be a temporary fix. I’m not exactly sure what the price is per unit of storage but I do know that Birkie was looking up alternate options.

Thank you both very much. I lov this place too. However, we have obviously outgrown it. I think our options are to move to a better site, or make this one work the best way we can. I could go through and delete a whole bunch of old photos that aren’t necessary any more. However, the problem will come back eventually and we will still be left with crippled functions. I really wish I had the know how to make my own server and forum space. That would be ideal. Maybe I should talk to my friend who is an IT whiz. He got a 35 westy from Travis for cheap through me so he owes me lol. While I've grown use to this forum and its layout, vBulletin or phpBB truly are the better ways to go, but of course, there's the $$$ involved. I joined the AFCA (American Fan Collector's Association) for a year, so $50 included offsetting the forum, though non-members could also join. I personally thought that membership fee was rather hefty (especially when I pay less for other non-profits I'm affiliated with, and get a lot more out of it). I guess what I'm suggesting - not sure if it's possible, or even feasible if we were chartered say as a non-profit org? Those of us who are rather serious pay some nominal (but reasonable) dues, which could also offset the costs of better forum software/hosting? Just a suggestion anyways. And I'm an IT whiz myself, though I've been lacking the time to work on my own servers (though they work fine, so I leave them as they are).

A 2 TB hard drive is $70, that would be 2 million pics at the current size. I'm not rich, semi-retired, but I'd buy the damn thing if anyone here knows the technical aspects of tapping forum software for a USB3 connection. This is an important thing to preserve what we've learned. It's a nice thought, but running a forum off a USB-connected drive isn't feasible, especially amid today's security concerns. Not to mention issues of bandwidth, and the fact that the average home user only has dynamic IPs (I have static here, that I got when our telephone co-op also installed fiber).

I had hosted pictures on my static IP home server for years. But, then. AT&T upgraded the equipment without warning and my static IP was changed. No way to get the old one back because of the network topology in use. I would recommend using some sort of dynamic DNS system if you plan to use any local server for the pictures. I got lucky and kept mine for 8 or 9 years, but eventually all good things end..... especially with AT&T.
The bandwidth was medium, considering it was just specialist car enthusiast forum pictures. I was still able to use the Internet without issues alongside the server.

Of course. But I only suggested it not feasible, as the average internet user isn't using Linux or a UNIX-derivative (I personally use Linux and Solaris 10 on my servers), and Windows is not known for the world's greatest security.
On that note, security has changed a lot in 10-15 years. Otherwise, I'd gladly host a small server on my end. I actually use VMWare ESXI, so I can segregate my virtual servers, so if one got compromised, the rest of the machine is still okay.
And yes, I'm thankful we don't have AT&T for our internet here. AT&T is the primary wireless carrier in my town; I can see the tower from my ranch, and service still sucks. AT&T has NOT been maintaining its infrastructure in the past year and a half!

I'm not overly confident in the accuracy of my infrared thermometer; it's surplus/e-waste from the company that made it, but it does work, so I might need to compare it to a Fluke. Have another temp gauge with a K-type thermocouple (one I bought myself retail and another, also e-waste/surplus) and they're both alike in readings. Anyways, looking at the unit from the door - left header tank is about 30 degrees, bottom of evap is about 22-23 degrees, and right header tank was over 40. Frost line is just below the header tank. I got it about 1/3 of the way up after the NCG purge, but it went back down.
By comparison, running the soup can OUTSIDE with much higher humidity and heat (at night), frost line went to about 6/8-7/8 of the right header tank. Forgot to measure temps, and it kept running, as there was nothing in the cabinet. But even without the heater, it ran quiet. I'll swap the heater into the soup can when I hopefully get to move it in the house today and use it as my "daily driver" for the beer fridge.

Just a new subject! Has anyone heard from Blackhorse? I know he had some medical issues but didn’t know what they were. Hope he’s all right.

Same here, I hope he's OK. He hasn't posted in nearly a year. With animals, a business, and a busy life he was prone to disappearing for months at a time, though.
