I have a question, Is this forum using the same server with other forums? If so that might be the problem with space.. I think each forum on this server gets a set amount of storage space. Once you reach that limit, that’s it. I have no idea if it can be increased or not.

This is from the file storage faq for these forums
“Each individual area (Themes / Plugins / Attachments) has its own page for purchasing additional space if needed. Upgrades to each area are separate. For example purchasing additional theme space does not mean you get more plugin space and vice versa”

I have an ad blocker running, but ProBoards keeps reminding me to turn it off. I regularly text ckfan when spam has posted.
Increasing storage is the easy short-term solution, but we need to figure out what to do long-term. If anyone that needs help with a monitor top comes in here and drops however many pictures of whatever size in threads, storage will always be an issue. Of the top of my head, it seems we have a dozen core members that frequently post here. It's up to the administrators and possibly those core members to make this sustainable.
I have never donated. I have always made by "donations" by rescuing these damn things all over the country. It seems that the short-term fix would be to delete less valuable pictures. Going forward, I wonder if it's possible to cap picture size more than it is? Regardless of what we do, this will always be on the backs or out of the pockets of the relative few that pay the bills.
I'm going to do some searching around here and try to convince the administrators to delete some pictures.

Like you said though, it’s going to be a recurring problem.

I also need to delete and or move more photos. Been so busy I haven't gotten it done. And I have so far donated only my time and knowledge but could give some $ if that turns out to be the answer.

I have so far donated only my time and knowledge but could give some $ if that turns out to be the answer. If anyone needs to donate money to expand this forum it's the one-time user that pops in here to try and nab a part. You've gone way over and above the call of duty to help all of us learn.

Hi all, I'd be happy to help pay for more storage as a medium-term solution. This is a valuable forum! In the meantime, I'm in the process of seeing if it is possible to archive certain threads (including high-resolution images) for preservation at the internet archive. That way, the content will not be lost no matter what happens to proboards in the future. Forums in particular are tricky because access to the full images is restricted to members, and they tend to discourage automated harvesting (like the crawling that captured this from February 2001). But really, some of the content truly is historically valuable and worth the effort to preserve. I think I've figured out how to do it, but we'll see if theory matches practice..

A 2 TB hard drive is $70, that would be 2 million pics at the current size. I'm not rich, semi-retired, but I'd buy the damn thing if anyone here knows the technical aspects of tapping forum software for a USB3 connection. This is an important thing to preserve what we've learned.

See, this is why I love this place. Everyone chips in and starts talking about solutions rather than just moaning. I am all ears for any ideas that anyone may have. In the meantime, I want to explore what other options are available for us as far as moving to a new place entirely is concerned.

Maybe Chris can weigh in on the subject, I believe he’s the chief administrator. I think a lot of us would contribute money, but I think we need to look at all the options then we can make a better decision. I don’t have the technical background to help there , but don’t want some short term fix .

I think a lot of us would contribute money, but I think we need to look at all the options then we can make a better decision. I don’t have the technical background to help there , but don’t want some short term fix . There has got to be a technical fix. With a little work, it may be possible to (for example) write an upload dialog box/widget/thingy that (a) saves the full-sized images in Amazon S3, and (b) save tiny thumbnails in proboards storage. S3 is something like 2¢/GB/yr. As far as this low-traffic forum is concerned it's "essentially free and unlimited storage". The trick is to get security right, that's the annoying part. Realistically, it'd be a few months of on-and-off effort to attempt to get something like that working. So I'd favor donating some $$ to maintain the status quo for another year or so while attempting a workaround. I still think it's worthwhile to archive special threads worthy of preservation, independent of the storage issue. We really are in a "digital dark age" in terms of the staggering amount of data (images, forum posts, e-mails, etc) that won't survive more than a few decades.

I found some time and move some pics to Flikr, I made sure to delete the old attachments. Moved 20 that were less than 1 meg and 8 that were more over 2 meg. I hope that will give room for a few new pics and I will more more latter. I ran into trouble on the one long thread, got error message saying there were to many files attached so I couldn't move everything in the tread. To bad as they are all larger files.
