So I'm thinking about the DR in "Whatever happened to Baby Jane."
Given the fact that the movie focuses on two aging 1930s starlets (I believe Joan Crawford's character says this) who's money is "running out" was the DR a purposeful prop meant to signify they once had money (enough to buy this nice DR fridge) but now it's running out (not enough to replace it with a newer model).
To the contemporary audience in the 1960s, would they have recognized it as a aged model that signified they once had money and lost it?
(I'm really curious about these types of things.that fly over the heads of modern audiences. In 12 Angry Men the "former slum kid juror" is wearing a wool suit in sweltering heat- signifying he only has one suit. His wool suit is "lost" on most modern audiences.)

I've never seen the movie but I would venture to guess that you are spot on in your assumption. It makes sense that two stars from the 30s would have a monitor top. It makes even more sense that they would still have it in the 60s due to lack of money. It would have been seen as something passe and not something desirable. Oh the 60s and 70s, the decades where style finally died!

A few movies that I can think of off the top of my head: The Best Years of Our Lives, Mrs. Miniver, Singing in the Rain, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Return to Peyton Place and (wrongly, for the year in which it was set) A River Runs Through It.

The facebook post has been taken down apparently. However I found the video on YouTube. It is a 1920s Frigidaire. Very similar to the one that I've helped a bit with Travis to get ready for sale. Just like his, I bet this one was converted over to use a modern compressor and condenser. Something tells me that it doesn't still have it's SO2 belt drive unit still under there chugging away. Very neat soda fountain though!

I was watching some pretty odd stuff this morning (to the general population at least). Its a video made by a guy who makes all kinds of videos showing long forgotten TV adverts, bumpers, etc. I happened to notice at about the 10:30 mark (after some yogi bear shenanigans) that an ad for Sanka coffee (blech!) featuring Aunt Bee, Andy Griffith, and Opie. Thats not interesting at all. What is interesting is the goregeous Flat Top that Aunt Bee has open and then abruptly closes. Then she turns away and you can see the badge. Its my flat top! A 1936 CF 1 C16! You can tell by the handle and the badge. It also looks like there is frost on the evaporator. Very cool stuff. I especially like the look on Aunt Bee's face on picture 3. Ha! Here is a link to some screen shots I took: drive.google.com/open?id=0B8_jm7K-ahMaYjI4RWRoQXZLczgHere is a link to the video at the moment the ad starts: youtu.be/RbikLApeFIk?t=10m34s

Here's one - the 1960 movie "The Apartment." It's in the main protagonists' kitchen/apartment. I could be wrong, but looks like a CK.

Yeah. I noticed it doesn't have a badge that covers the heater... but then again, the cabinet doesn't seem to have *any* GE identifying marks, so I suspect they were removed/concealed for filming to hide its true identity.

In the orignal movie Rocky, he has a CK in his apt. In the movie Unforgiven with Richard Gere and Diane Lane.. The French guy that she has the affair with, has a CK in his apt. He serves Ritchard chilled vodka from it.

I love Lucy in the episode "Never Do Biz With Friends" has a monitor top in Fred and Ethel's kitchen. The refrigerator is in keeping with the theme of the episode that Fred is a tightwad who won't buy Ethel new things, since the whole plot revolves around the Mertzes buying the Ricardo's old washing machine after Lucy gets a new one. As a side note, this is the only time the Mertzes kitchen is ever seen in the series. If this had been filmed later in the series, it undoubtedly would have been a Westinghouse, since Westinghouse was later the sponsor of the Lucy shows. I worked for Paramount, which is the old Desilu lot, and they are in the process of renovating/demolishing some of the older buildings and making friends with the engineers, I absconded with a Westinghouse fan that has a "Desilu" tag on it. While I highly doubt it is the same one, the same model fan was used in a Lucy episode where they renovate the Mertzes apartment, and Lucy blows feathers on the new wet painted walls. But a neat thought that maybe this was used in such a classic series.
