Wow great progress allan. Looks like your gonna have it working good as new or better soon. Thanks. Gotta get the rpm tweaked and get the correct 3L belt installed. I also believe the cap tube needs some adjustment.

I'm wondering if we haven't mucked up the original topic of Allan's Shelvador to the extent that the off-topic part of this should be moved to it's own thread? Something like "CK-30-C16 Float valve / TXV / 134a conversion" in the CK section? I agree; this information is too important to be lost in strange places. I've moved the TXV thread here monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/414/

I didn't know they were still making belt driven compressors? What is their benefit over hermetic ones these days?

They are for special applications like marine use and dc motors. Basically anywhere AC power isn't desirable or readily available. I've seen them mounted on top of camping/travel trailers, powered by a 5 Hp Briggs & Stratton engine, for air conditioning in woebegotten locations. A commercially available item, with a fiberglass housing. They also make a very top-end natural gas powered heat pump/central air conditioner for locations where natural gas is a honkin' lot cheaper than electricity. It's a natural gas powered engine driving a multi-ton shaft drive compressor. In ground source or air coil. And it gets insane efficiency numbers in the heat pump mode since they blow the hot air off the engine over the heat pump evaporator.

The Crosley belt drive has performed very well with the Italian "Dorin" compressor. It arrived with a bad valve plate and has always been a bit noisy even after the plate was replaced. I broke it down this weekend getting ready for the new German Made "Bitzer" compressor. The Bitzer is so much heavier and better built than the Dorin even though they both have the same specs. I had to wait about 4 months as it was shipped from Germany, and even their shipping crate was impressive! I am amazed that there is almost no oil in the evap after opening it up. I heated it quite warm with the torch and found the evap dry!! It was running the Dorin factory mineral oil with the 134a and the evap was fully flooded when I shut it down for disassembly. So the flooded 134 evap does not injest oil! It seems to float it up and the skimmer did its job.

Wow! This is great stuff. I wonder how the shaft seals hold up on the new compressors. After running it for months, did you see any signs of leakage?

Allan,
That's one nice looking compressor. Isn't it possible to reuse the original motor I hate to see all the original parts left out.
