Allan, That's one nice looking compressor. Isn't it possible to reuse the original motor I hate to see all the original parts left out. I so much want everything as original as possible but unfortunately 1/6 hp is not enough for this compressor. It overloads the original Delco motor which is rated at 3.1 amps. It pulls 3.7 with this compressor and that is its lowest amps at shut off. And Bitzer says this pump must run no lower than 550 rpm and I have it tuned to 560

The new Bitzer is running. Fitted it with a sump oil sight glass and suction line sight glass so I can watch the alkyl benzene that came in the Bitzer behave. The original motor can't pull this pump as it pulls 3.7 amps against the motor's 3.1 amp rating. Bitzer says this pump must run at least 550 rpm so I have it tuned to 560 rpm. Nothing is easy on this one. Had to make a special set up and mount the fan blade to an adjustable belt pulley. The original pulley was spinning the pump at 650 rpm. Cools fine but I have a clicking noise in the compressor that I can't figure out. Going to try a suction accumulator to see if its pulsation causing it. Also ran it on 22 for a while. Had the same noise but capacity has to be at least double! It had only a 3 minute run cycle. And cylinder head stayed below 150 degrees which was surprising. Any ideas about the noise?? Oil level is perfect, 0 degree evap, 48 degree suc line. Shut off pressure is 95 head an 2 psi suction.

It was probably just after the Spacemaker series, late 40's/50's with a proper freezer compartment. Not quite a "rare old antique".

Worked today trying to solve the mystery noise in the Bitzer pump. Tried varying the charge with no change. Tried several rpm settings from 525 to 725 rpm with no change. I installed an oil sight glass on the sump and the oil is staying right at the recommended level. You out can see the sight glass in the bottom right corner of these 2 pics

One article I read mentioned it could be gas pulsation that may be corrected with a suction accumulator. So I built this one with 2 sight glasses. It didn't help the noise at all but allowed me to see the oil return in action. There is very little oil traveling in the suction line. Neat to watch in action!

While I am waiting for a warranty replacement for the noisy Bitzer size 0 I decided to try out this bigger Bitzer size 1 and start out with R22 in its veins. Started out with about 475 rpm, 90 inches of .028 cap tube and 28 ounces of R22. It doesn't like low rpm, as it shakes too much in this spring cradle on the Crosley. It needs about 800 rpm to smooth out and not shake the mount so bad. Here it is after a short start up. Box 35 degrees F Evap -23F Suction 4psi Discharge 185psi

A very erg cold evaporator! -31F. She won't go any colder though. Cabinet is a frosty 11F. Bitzer has to go. Compression ratio making it shake the spring mounting cradle too much
