Thank you so much for your info. The # is ck-2-b16. I'm located 3o miles east of Columbus. If you no any body that would do a repair for me please advise. I. Know standard activities but this is a little different and I sure don'tt want a sulfur leak. I don't have the manual or tap tool. Thanks again Cool. The CK-2 size machines are very reliable. It's likely had some type of incident in the past which has lead to a buildup of air or noncondensable gas in the system; or the float valve is worn out. If you are in Columbus, GA then you're not far from me. When you have time, please sign up for a username on the forum, so that people can send you private messages. Also it helps us to keep track of the troubleshooting. In the future, people can see your initial post and the problem you were having, and then when it's fixed, they can see the resolution which solved the problem. Sincerely, David

I would be leaning more towards a stuck unloader. I would try this first. Turn the unit off and let it defrost. Then stick a few pans of hot water in the freezer. Turn the unit on and listen closely. The tone of the compressor changes as the unloader goes to the pumping position. I have one that is sticky and I was able to exercise it many times by starting it up under a heavy load with the hot water in the freezer. Now it behaves better but still needs work done on it at some point. When I’ve found this unit not working in the past it was always making a tinny sputtering kind of sound. I bet this is what is going on with yours.

These have been out of production for decades but they do turn up on eBay from time to time. You may be able to find one there. If you're doing this for someone else who just wants it up and running, my advice would be to just cut a line on the suction side of the system, and install a copper solder-in tee access valve such as a JB Industries A31135 fitting. That would allow you to pressure test, evacuate and recharge the system and get it back to them quickly.

There aren't too many people left who work on these fridges. Unless there's someone nearby who isn't on our forum, it's likely that you will need to ship it to a repair facility. Sincerely, David

Antique Appliance Co. in Georgia has done some very good work in the past; but alas they have moved away from general repairs and focused now only on full restorations. I think the specialist skills set to work on these very early models may be a dying art and it may be hard for them to get someone to do that work for them in a manner which fits into their business model. Sincerely, David

David would be the guy to help you. With these crazy fuel prices, it would be pretty expensive to ship. Maybe a road trip ??

We’ve had a monitor top for a number of years. I was wondering where I can locate an owners manual. I’ve manually defrosted my fridge over the years not knowing how the defroster switch worked- such as, can you keep the food in overnight or how long would it take, or how often and when. Thanks

The service manuals can be found in the sections that go over the various models. Figure out what model you have and then look in that section. The defrost function will allow food to be kept cold enough not to spoil but will allow the freezer to defrost. I usually do this overnight.

My grandfather, Leonard Hutt, invented the bimetallic switch, which would be used on these units, while at GE. He has ~40 patents to his name (I have most of them). Incedentally, my family had a monitor top fridge at our camp in Galway, NY until around 1990 (wish I could have obtained that one!) I also have a tiny notebook with his pencil drawings, which were personal sketches that I cannot make sense of. Hope any MT enthusiasts will find this interesting! -Tom
