Sorry about sideways pics but after 15 minutes I give up!! So frustrating some times So I picked this up locally yesterday and the owners had plugged it up about 2 weeks ago. When i arrived the evap was a solid block of ice and the compressor was running. Took back to the shop and installed new wiring, electronic start relay and digital electronic controls for the testing phase. This is what happened when i started it backup: 1. Evap temp fell very quickly down to 28 degrees and then started climbing back up to 55 degrees and stayed 2. Inspection revealed only one pass of evap circuit frosted and everdur tube and feed line frosted over. 3. The interesting thing is that for a full 5 minutes after i shut down the compressor the float continued to feed liquid into the evap. Holding the everdur tube and feed line during this five minutes would not stop it from icing so i know there was a lot of liquid in the float tank. 5. Here is my question, if the seat is pluggged with the black gunk that jhigdon speaks of is this the only problem? 6. Or could it be a float needle that is stuck in an almost closed position? 7. Can I make a magnetic coil to raise this float, not much tank exposed? 8. Comments appreciated!!!!

Compressor sounds great and windings ohm out correctly with no readings to ground

Classic clogged orafice. Remove the machine and with it on the floor turn it over on its left side(float up). At the point when the float chamber becomes inverted you should hear a massive rush of refrigerant going into evap. If you only hear a trickle or nothing at all, then its clogged. I've never tried one of those float lifters or magnets. I have always just inverted the top and given it a little shake to listen for the float shaking around in there.

So after being off all night i started it up this morning with a 65 degree cabinet and evap. Within 5 minutes i have a 14 degree flooded evap and a rushing noise in evap. Yesterday had almost no refrigerant sound and only one pass of evap was frosted. Will test and monitor today

What changed? Did you simply let it set over night?

I have seen also with the CK machines if they have been upside down for awhile they will act this way on the initial start up. I think what happens is the refrigerant drains into the compressor and leaves evap empty. Then when started, the low side pressure approaches a vacuum and this triggers the suction regulator to bypass within the compressor. When this happens, the refrigerant just circulates within the compressor. Sometimes they will keep on doing this until you roll them over just until the float is inverted a little to equalize pressures.

What changed? Did you simply let it set over night? Yes I just unplugged and let set for about 15 hours. Plugged up and it cooled like brand new. Froze ice trays in an hour and a half and hard! Cycling perfect for 10 hours now. Off at 3 degree evap and on at 17 degrees box at 32 degrees. Will record cycle times after stable tomorrow

This one was bought local and set on the owners porch for years idle. About 2 weeks ago when they decided to sell they plugged it up and when I picked up evap was completely iced over about an inch thick. Took straight yo my shop upright and it sat for a couple of days. When I started it back up it was starving the evap. But after being off Overnite it is working flawless today. Can't believe how fast it can freeze ice trays! After 10 hours of run today I put it through a very hot defrost with my electric defrosters. It pulled temp down very quickly and has a flooded evap. Will start recording run times and temps tomorrow. Very strange. And by the way I ever so slightly cracked the charge valve to let micro bubbles come up through the oil. Immediate Queen of Stink so I don't believe NCG is an issue

Ok it has been 4 days now with perfect operation! Still can't figure out what happened last week to cause the starved evap. We have decided it does not have a suction regulator. Yesterday it was at 3 degree evaporator and 32 degree box. I had a few minutes to kill so I turned the stat down and within 30 minutes I had a negative 17 degree F evap and a 16 degree box temp. See pic of thermostats

My understanding from the way the service manual says it is the suction regulator is actually the oil pump being starved of oil. The result is the unloader opens. Don't know what point this happens but all CK machines are built the same so they should all do it at one point. Damn CKs and their perfection.... Like I told cablehack we should all have an icecube making contest to see who can freeze them the fastest and CKs are banned.

Oh, DRs are welcome! Just not CKs, they don't play fair.
