I recently acquired this 1951 IH fridge.After a rewire and good cleaning...I plugged her in and she came right on and started frosting up almost immediately! In my 23 years of working with soda machines and old fridges....I've only run across 2 of these...as IH only produced them from 1947-1955....which, in my opinion, makes it rare. Someone repainted it....probably in the 60s with the Coppertone color. I will more than likely sand and go back to the white. IH was the only fridge that I know of that incorporated a bottle opener on the door latch!....can you say...Beer fridge! I'm glad to share this lil jewel. Thanks for reading

Yes, the IH fridges are neat. I was surprised to learn about the bottle opener too. I've seen a fair number of them so they must have sold well. I'm honestly not sure who made them because I know that IH didn't make them.

Yes, the IH fridges are neat. I was surprised to learn about the bottle opener too. I've seen a fair number of them so they must have sold well. I'm honestly not sure who made them because I know that IH didn't make them. I wonder who did? I've worked on a couple of IH freezers, one of only a few (IH, Amana, Deep Freeze) that took advantage of R22 for low temperature service. I also have a IH 3-ton central air conditioning condenser behind the shop. Was working when removed; they had the old oil furnace pulled and the A/C replaced along with it. The only Tecumseh hermetic I've ever seen with an oil sight glass...... |

My early 70s coldspot made by whirlpool also used R22. I thought that was neat.

I have never heard that anyone other that IH made the refrigerators. A division of IH made them,they sold the division to Whirlpool in 1955.

Although best known for farm equipment, IH produced home appliances for farmers and nonfarmers alike. This included refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and freezers. IH had a refrigeration division of its own, as did other vehicle manufacturers of the time: Ford had Philco, Chrysler had Airtemp, General Motors had Frigidaire, Nash-Kelvinator Corporation (and then American Motors) had Kelvinator, Studebaker had the Franklin Appliance Company, and Crosley had Crosley.
The IH appliance division had originally been developed to manufacture commercial-grade items to farmers, most of whom had just received electricity by way of the many electrification projects in the U.S. before and after World War II. Among the offerings were milk coolers and walk-in freezers for produce and meat. Later on, IH courted the farmer's wife with kitchen refrigerators available in the latest designer styles. The IH spokeswoman for these products was Irma Harding, a factory trademark. These products were introduced in 1947 and sold for less than 10 years. The refrigeration division was sold to Whirlpool Corporation in 1955. Since the time of production was short, IH appliances are rare today.[13][40]

I kind of thought that was so. As they said, pretty much all of the vehicle mfgr's also made major appliances. And why not? The same sheet metal works, casting, machining, electrical, painting, that they used for vehicle manufacturing was exactly what was needed for major appliance construction.
Actually GE was the exception, never having an automotive line.

It's really hideous looking; several people in it's past have painted it with what would appear to have been a dead possum and a roller pan..... |

Seems to be fairly common practice around here, judging from the appearance of a lot of the old refrigerators I come across. I think this would be the tool you need to get the possum to roll properly for a nice even coat: WARNING: EASILY OFFENDED CAT PEOPLE LOOK AWAY NOW! Nothing to see here folks. Move along--  Obviously this is a very old image, about 40 years ago a very good veterinarian gave me this. Notice the left-hand thread. (I have no idea the significance of that.) (His method of giving cats vaccinations was to shove them head-first into a rubber barn boot with only the a__ sticking out, give them the shot and shake them out of the boot.) |

I guess that's why some say never let road kill go to waste. lol I never knew IH made central ac condensers. I vaguely remember seeing a window unit version as a kid. |

Here's some pics of the IH central air conditioning condensing unit: The previous owner wanted to keep the fan motor, otherwise it's complete. But that gives a better view of the rather unique design of the condenser coils. The badge is showing it's age some. The specs tag has been painted over, and where the paint has come off the print has too, so not much to see there. |
