Currently on EBay. This is one strange looking machine! Appears to be a belt drive with a receiver tank below it. What do you think? R12 system

That is odd looking. Not many of those around still I would wager. 1948 would most likely be R-12 unless it happens to be R-22

I'm going to say it's direct drive instead of belt drive, some sort of flexible shaft drive; it looks to me like I'm seeing the back side of the compressor, the motor would have to be behind it. I've seen that kind of drive before, but never that kind of cabinet. Somehow it just screams "ice cream freezer" to me.

Possibly a direct drive but I don't think there is enough depth between the drums for that. If you look real close it appears to be the back end of a motor but I am not sure

Is it possibly belt drive with the motor mounted under the compressor? Almost what it looks like.

Possibly. I can see the receiver, with a refrigerant fitting on the left side. But I also see what appears to be a small junction box with 2 wires going into it. Maybe the frame is taller than it looks, and there's a motor above the receiver but under the compressor.
Bet it's a bitch to reach some of the parts for service, loosen the bolts to adjust the belt, etc.......

I just checked out the add and see it is in my state. Already 1 bid on it. It is way to big for me to store or I would be tempted to own it.

Hey,
I am the one bid. That thing is coming home with me. How I am going to move it remains to be seen.
