I'm new at this so bear with me please. I purchased a MT. I plugged it in it ran,it cooled. I let it run about 30 seconds cut it off. When I cut it off, there is a piece behind the freezer compartment.it is about 3" long oil substance probably refrigerant sprayed out. It looks like the tip is broken off,can I fix this and How? Any help is greatly appreciated.

So you actually saw oil spray out of the line? That is unusual. If the unit is filled with sulfur dioxide you should have been hit in the nose with a tremendous bad smell.

Yes the piece I'm talking about tapers at the bottom and as it turns out it looks like the tip is broken off. Yeah there was a weird smell. Maybe 1 ounce of fluid came out. I held my finger over it . It took a minute of so for pressure to ease off. But this was like a thin cooking oil texture. Is this some type of temperature sensor?

Ah, ok. If it’s a CA they used Methyl Formate as a refrigerant. It’s a very low pressure refrigerant and will be a liquid at room temperature. I think it turns to a gas at around 86 degrees Fahrenheit I believe. It could still have most of its charge inside believe it or not. I would tape up the lines securely for right now. The line will have to be brazed by a person who is very familiar with how to do brazing on stainless steel. Methyl formate kind of smells like sweet paint thinner to me. It has a very light odor. Also, your top should be from 1934.

Thank you very much. I have always wanted a Monitor Top but they come up rarely in NC.. I got this one porcelain is excellent. Somebody tried to open it and ripped the handle out of the chrome bracket. I'm in the middle of fixing this. I need new power cord, the usual TLC that these units deserve. I will post a picture when the Lady of the house can look at this site,I'm not too good at figuring this stuff out. Thank you again Have a blessed evening!

I thought it might be a CA. Common for these to have the high side line broken off when the top is lifted/replaced without due care. I got sprayed in the face with my CA-1. The methyl formate is a liquid at atmospheric pressure and will eventually evaporate unless everything is perfectly sealed. The question now is how much has it lost. Unless you work for an educational/scientific/medical kind of institution, it will be very difficult to get new methyl formate, because of the restrictions on its sale. However, you can use modern refrigerants R11 or R123 as a drop in replacement.

Thank all of you for your help. I will post pictures when I get this fixed. It's good to talk to people who know about these things.
