I drove past an auction two Saturdays ago, been trying to have room to work on my 62 ChevyII,so I didn't stop and buy more. An hour latter my cousin called me from the auction and described what sounded like a DR model. He wanted to know if $25 would be a good price. I said yes since you don't know if it works don't pay too much. While he was talking to someone a second auctioneer sold the frig for $5. He found the buyer and bought it from him for $20. He didn't know the top would fall off if tipped so he said can you just come tomorrow and help move it. Well we moved it to my place so I could evaluate it. It starts and runs but wouldn't cool. Tought it might be the float stuck or plugged till I smelled the so2 inside. Could be it was just low and couldn't open the float. Worst part is that the shell is live and the compressor and its leads show less than 500k ohms to ground. While not burnt clear out its not worth spending a lot of time on if the windings are already getting cooked. It has been repainted at sometime and they chose to paint the float and emblems black. And someone found a bass cap to fit the service port. The leak looks to be old to me. Looks like the tube got hit when the top got put on some time.

That’s a shame. At least it was cheap! Has it stopped leaking yet?

Interesting find! Glad he was able to get it; although it was bad he didn't get the $5 deal the first buyer did!
As for the leak, it looks like it's been seeping for a while. Hopefully it hasn't leaked down to the degree that air and moisture has been going in with temperature changes, leading to bad corrosion. But, if it didn't seize up that's probably not the case.
As for the 500KΩ to ground, that's definitely not "good" but I think lots of members here have had them run quite a long time like that. Will be interesting to see what the readings look like after evacuation, as well.
That service port plug looks like a brass carburetor jet to me!

But, if it didn't seize up that's probably not the case. It still had 50 psi when I got it. Now that most of it is gone I put it back up to 50 with dry nitrogen. Will have to watch it till I get ready to do more.

That’s really neat to see all of this out in the open. It’s good to hear that the oil was nice and clear. Looks like the bumps on the bottom are for the springs mounting the compressor.

No I think the bumps are like camels, only they hold so2 lol Really your right about the mounts I am sure. I blew nitrogen through the float while it was upside down, looks like it is not plugged.

Interesting about the float not being plugged. That's a good finding. Since this one had a leak; the loss of refrigerant would explain the lack of cooling. Thanks for taking the time to open and inspect this one. Will be interesting to see how the motor looks.

I haven't checked in for a while, but it's pretty neat to be greeted by a DR1 about to be opened up! Curious to see if the DR1s had evolved fan blades attached to the rotor.
I have a feeling my DR1 is headed toward the same fate. Poor resistance to ground, gives you a tingle when touched, and the last time I fired it up I could have sworn I saw it draw 400w for a brief time...

Birkie, I’m sorry to hear that. I may have “liked” your comment but I don’t like the fact that your DR is sick!

Yes, this is really cool to see even though I hate to see a grounded out motor! I’m sure my poor D2 will have to have similar surgery done at some point. Am I seeing things or is there corrosion on the metal parts of the compressor that I see?
