Hi everyone! I’m new to the forum and new to vintage refrigerators. But not new to vintage appliances. Ive always been more of a stove, washer , dryer kinda guy. But couldn’t pass up this GE refrigerator. Model ND-8-DC I was told that it worked but hadn’t been used for a few years . Cosmetically it’s in great shape no rust door seals good came with the original ice trays and instruction manual .The problem I’m having is that the freezer only partially freezes . The top shelf for the ice cubes freezes up and gets nice and frosty and the back right corner of the freezer freezes up but it doesn’t go any further . When I hauled it , it did have to be laid down on its side . It was laid down on its left side for about 2 hours. When I got it home I let it sit up for 2 maybe 3 hours and then gave it a test run . I was told on another forum that I should have let it sit for 8 to 10 hours and another guy told me to let it sit for another 24 hours and try it again. It’s hasnt changed . The compressor sounds good but does get hot after it been on for an hour or so . The back coils get warm but not hot . I’ve also read about how it could be a partial blockage or low on Freon . I’m new to this realm and not sure what to think. I just read in another post , about putting a pan of hot water in and running for 5 minute intervals . I’m going to give it a try and see how it goes. Here are 2 youtube videos of the freezer and the compressor running. Adding ice trays with cold water actually makes it start to defrost and drip. youtu.be/4FqwSNuWAwQyoutu.be/qZIao1qScLM

Most likely it is low on refrigerant.

It could be oil logged so try the pans of hot water like they said. Its easy and doesn’t cost anything. If it’s low on refrigerate that means a slow leak somewhere.

Hi thanks for the reply’s I’m trying the hot pan of water method as I write this. What I read wasn’t really specific on how many times to cycle the compressor or how long to leave it off in-between five minutes cycles. So I’m doing 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off. Also here are few pics of the fridge . If I can’t fix it or find someone to fix it my area it’s going to be a real shame to scrap it.

The pan of hot water didn’t help any . I tried a few times over the course of an hour. And then tried letting it run for close to 45 min. I’m going to call around today and see if anyone is willing to work on it. And if not I guess I’ll be reading and learning how to recharge and or clear blockages lol. I’ve actually never had to have someone come and fix an appliance. I’ve always read up on it and figured it out on my own. This is how it was when bought a 1961 Frigidaire flair. I ended up rewiring it from top to bottom. But ended up with a really nice vintage stove that out weighs most modern appliances. As well as many old radios, phones , fans , mixers and few clocks. Figure I’ll add this to my resume. Haha. I have some background in electrical and electronics, but none in refrigeration. So this should be interesting if I do in fact tackle this on my own. AJ.

Wow, what a beauty. That is very similar to one that my dad has but yours is more complete and is in better shape...and that’s saying something. Don’t scrap that one. It’s way too nice to send it to heaven. These units use a very reliable compressor. Same unit that was used in the FEA machines which were replacements for dead monitor tops. I also have a similar unit in my 49 GE freezer which works great. I’m going to go with the advice already stated and say that it is low on gas. Obviously it has a very small leak. Where are you located? One of us may be close to you. Also, those have service ports which make charging it easy for a professional. They will need a hermetic service kit though. You came to the right place though. You will fit right in.

Working or not it’s not going to the scrap yard . I made my mind up about that a little wile go. I’m in the Johnstown PA area. There are 2 local shops in my area. I highly doubt the one will touch it. But the other mite. I got side tracked today and didn’t get a chance to call around.

I would make sure to tell them that it has service ports. That makes it much easier to work on. I think the low side is on the side of the compressor and the high side is next to the compressor on the high side line. I highly doubt anyone will have the right adapter to get into it though. To find that you will need to look for a hermetic service kit on eBay. You can usually find one there. Here is a link to one for cheap. I think it has the right key but if Gill would chime in I would appreciate a confirmation of that. Hi AJ. That is a beautiful machine! Very pleased you've decided to repair it.
Look around carefully on it for any signs of oil on the compressor near the electrical terminals, the soldered connections between the lines and the evaporator, or any other places the lines touch the frame of the machine and there could have been rubbing.
I read your posts, but may have overlooked this info. How long have you run it continuously and not seen an improvement?
I hope you can get a local business to check it for you. I know they can be very hard-headed. Remind them that these machines were build without the high tech wizardry on the new refrigerators. They were built to be serviced with basic tools. If anything, this should be pretty easy to fix for them.

Hi thanks for the reply. And thanks for the comments on you tube. I just saw them. I’ll have to get a better look at the lines when I get home tonight. I’m pretty sure it ran for close to 4 hours sat night after letting it sit for 24 hours.

I had a chance to look at the lines. The ones in the evaporator look a little rough around the edges they look dark on the ends where they connect but they don’t feel oily. I had noticed that they looked a little pitted and figured I’d try to touch them up some with silver or metallic paint . Here are some pics . . The condenser lines all seem to be good as well as all the lines down by the compressor. I can’t really get a good look at the wiring going into the compressor there seems to be a cap over it? . Other than being dusty. Everything looks good underneath. No visual signs of oil leaking out.

If you look at the other side of the compressor it should have the low side port on it. That side houses the electrical connection.
