I watched the ad for this little cooler for weeks on the local craigslist and finally emailed the owner. The ad said it did not work but the email confirmed the refrigeration system was all there just did not turn on. It was about an hour away and I didn't find time to go look and the ad disappeared from Craigslist. Well yesterday I called him and found he still had it so off I went to look. I had no idea just how small it was till I saw it. It holds a whopping 12 bottles of Coke. I bought it and brought it home to find the controls contacts are about shot and the start relay is sticking on at times. Unfortunately the start relay is built into the control like other old Westinghouse's I have, but the compressor works and its still full of good old Freon 12. Not a lot a of room inside. This top just sits on like the old Frigidaire's.

Very very nice! I remember seeing this one on Craigslist and you even mentioned that you had seen it. Hopefully you can get the control / relay working right. It is so tiny and cute!

It's cute. The small ones are easier to sneak into the house.

It's cute. The small ones are easier to sneak into the house. Funny you should say that, I didn't even try to sneak it in. Was showing it to my oldest and when she walked out so I said look what I got. I took the start relay out of the control tonight. Isn't meant to come out, the control housing is riveted together. No rivets at the corner near the relay so I was able to pry it open enough to get it out. The stationary contact are riveted to the start relay and were not to bad. They contact a metal disk washer that also looked fair. I was able to polish them with a Dremel and I think the contacts will be ok. The start relay would be a lot of work to try to rebuild so I disconnect it's coil and contacts and used it as a terminal block to hook in an R081 relay overload. So far it is getting too cold so I am adjusting it warmer.

I tried to get into the combo thermostat / start relay on my 1937 Westinghouse and it was riveted together as well. I just left it alone for now because it works fine but it left me a little concerned as to what I would do in the future if it were to go kaput.

Well guys I took the plunge I went off boarder and picked up a westinginghouse small fridge . Ok here is the stats It has everything including the chiller tray, it has so2 in it and I understand the seals are a problem .The Gentleman I picked it up from said that it ran but did not shut off . So he unplugged it and let it set . It was freezing everything , but this was several years ago . So like a lot of other people they are down sizing and letting go of things . But they were very happy when I said I wanted to bring it back to life . So please feel free to post comments and any help is greatly appreciated Attachments:

Oh man. I love these old Westinghouse fridges. Travis has very bad memories associated with one he had that is very similar to yours. Like you said, the compressor terminal seals are the issue. Not trying to scare you or anything but this thing could short out or spring a leak at any time. Just the nature of these old SO2 Westy compressors. Shame really because I love how burly and strong the compressors are otherwise. Sometimes they don't give any issues at all though so who knows? Yours may run fine for years or it may let out its juice tomorrow. If it does start to hiss just run and open the doors as you leave!

Yes the seals scare me to so for the time being I'm going to leave it in the garage until weather is warmer so I can leave doors open .

I wouldn't be too scared to operate it. Just be careful and use your head. Its not like the SO2 is going to kill you...but it will make you wish you hadn't ever messed with it. I think that if I remember right, the terminals will show corrosion on them before they decide to let go. If yours have the corrosion on them it is probably not long for this world. I really wish there was a good way to repair these Westy compressors to ensure that they won't short out or leak through the terminals. I'm talking with Gill right now about a 1935 Westy that a friend of mine got from Travis which needs work. Trying to decide if I want to vacuum out the SO2 and put 134a in it...

Herb,
I think you could use the same McMaster-Carr foam seal that we've all used on the monitor tops if needed.

If you mean the seals for the compressor terminals then no, there really isn't much available. The only ones I have been able to find were the 3 sets that I have. I have already used one of them though. I have searched high and low and haven't been able to find anything like them.

Yes, he meant compressor seals. We cleared that up via private message. I am unaware of a replacement for the compressor seals. I certainly wouldn't fiddle with them if the unit had so2.
