I've personally never heard of such a thing. It looks archaic! Very neat but I bet it doesn't hardly have any insulation!

I don't know anything about it directly but it looks to be originally a refrigerator rather than an ice box converted. I don't see an area at the top to put the ice. Glad its not close to me I would like it.

I googled the Mathews Refrigerator and Door Co. and nothing came up except an obituary for a guy with the same last name who died at 91 in 2004 and had worked there as shop foreman for 30 years. That tells me the company was in operation probably at least from the 30s to the 60s. No idea when this unit was built.

It looks like a steampunk fridge if I ever saw one. Gill would love it. It looks like what a person from the 1800s would have envisioned a fridge to be like.
