Looks like I got the 260W soldering gun working. Hopefully that will be enough to get the screw moving.

So turns out the secondary screw wasn't soldered. Most likely when it was bled they just never bothered to resolder it.
Also, was not able to get the adapter to seal with copper washers. Ended up using two neoprene orings my dad had on hand. That, just above hand tight and shes holding 20psi.

I purchased a Bristol .216 spline wrench from Max-Gain Systems today. Using their catalog I decided I needed a long handle (who doesn't like more leverage?) S-216-6L (the L is for long handle). I had trouble with their online ordering system and called them to place my order. I'm glad I did. At the end of my conversation with Allen Bond I mentioned that I was going to use it on my vintage refrigerator and that rang a bell with him. What I needed was the S-216-OS (OS for Original Style) which was used for refrigeration. It has deeper grooves than the modern S-216 and "is not compatible with standard (modern) .216 spline fasteners." Here is their contact information: Allen Bond Max-Gain Systems, Inc. 221 Greencrest Court Marietta, GA 30068-3825 phone 770-973-6251 (Telephone hours are 7AM - 4 PM Eastern time) fax 815-461-7730 allen@mgs4u.com www.mgs4u.comHe was a big help. Thomas Thanks for that info. I have seen references to the refrigeration version but was unsure as to what the difference was. In one of my hermetic kits, the Bristol key does not fit even though it looks the same, so I'm wondering if this has something to do with it.

Cablehack,
What else do your hermetic kits contain?

Cablehack, What else do your hermetic kits contain? Thomas The hermetic kits contain a charge valve adaptor so that one can connect standard Schrader valve equipment like gauges, vacuum pump, etc to the fridge. This valve adaptor fits GE fridges directly, but for other brands there's adaptors supplied for that. Also, there's a series of keys for the charge valve adaptor catering for all the different vintage brands. The kit advises against using the charge valve adaptor keys for the initial loosening/final tightening of GE valves because of how tight they are and the possible breakage that might occur. So, for GE, a separate Bristol key is also supplied.

If you get one I highly recommend getting some neoprene o-rings to use with it. They work far better than the copper gaskets that come with it especially on any imperfect surface of the old equipment. I ordered a bunch from McMaster but cannot remember what size they were.

In case anyone is looking for a charge adapter kit, Imperial is not the only brand. Meuller Brass also made some. They seem to be not as heard about, and may be easier to find. Here is my 99 cent Ebay win. Mine is missing a 1/8 NPT plug, but that is easy, and makes a handy place for a schrader valve port.
