Where is the serial number on the old GE refrigerator? I have what I am told is a 1950's GE refrigerator it has one door and when you open the door it has a small freezer in the top right corner. I want to find the serial plate so I will know what model I have, the refrigerator stopped working so I need to find parts to get it fixed. Thank you for your help.

In most cases about that vintage it's located on the frame near the compressor. I doubt you will find parts by that means however, there aren't that many parts catalogs that go back 60 years. Best bet is generic replacements for the specific part, from a parts distributor. Take the defective part with you for the best bet on a match.

Do I need to take the back plate off to see the model number Ordinarily you take off the metal panel below the door, which basically lifts off; if it has a bin attached swing it open and lift it off. Then get a flashlight and look underneath on the back surface for an aluminum plate on an otherwise painted black frame.

Thank you for your help, can you name a place you would call? I usually start with Johnstone Supply; they can offer suggestions for other places if the (whichever part you need) isn't something they stock.

This is one of the best cross references I have found for older parts. www.marsm-a.com/images/Product-X-Ref-new.pdf Will need the part # not model # for this. I also have a few other older books I might find something in if I have the old part # to go by including an old Gemline catalog. Sure wish they were still around. On my 49-50 GE spacemaker they tags are near the compressor. This pic is a view looking from the front of frig. with toe plate removed.
