Folks -
I could use some help with my square or flat top refrigerator. I am not sure exactly what model I have but believe it is and FEA model. The thermostat is stamped 1947. I have had this refrigerator for several years now and just love the thing. It has worked well until this past weekend. I shut it down to defrost and when I powered it back up it started to cool and then just ran without cooling. The compressor got very hot. I have been running it on a very low setting for several days now and it seems to work, but the compressor cycles on and off very frequently. What I have noticed now that the cover is off is that the fan never runs. I am not sure if it ever did or assuming it must have how frequently.
Any suggestion for me on troubleshooting or what I need to do to get the fan running again.
Thanks much.

Unplug the machine and carefully see if the fan motor is hot. If so try turning the fan blade by hand. It should turn freely. Be careful as the blade may be sharp. If it is stiff or hard to turn the bearings have dried out and locked up. If it is cold and turns freely it mat not be getting power for some reason or the windings could be damaged.
Let us know I have info on how to take the motor apart and try to re-oil it.

If fan motor needs replacement, I have found that mars PN 05211 to be an exact replacement except for a slight difference in wiring. The two wire mars motor will hook up to the common and start in parallel to the compressor leads. Pretty simple.

Oops I mean common and run. Not common and start.

OK, here is what I found. The fan motor is stiff and I believe the bearings to be seized. The motor is cold and I can turn it by hand, but it does not spin freely. The compressor is still running and I have hooked up an external fan to see if it will cool this way. It seems to.

I used a Fasco D550 motor on my square top last year. Works fine and was an easy replacement. It is also a 2-wire, hooked to common and run. I used a small desk fan until my replacement fan arrived. Just let it run continually.

Folks -
Thanks much for everyone's help with my bad fan. I got the suggested Mars fan for a very reasonable $24. The swap and rewire was pretty easy and as soon as I plugged it back in everything worked just fine.
I was surprised to to find that these replacement fans seem rather common and are still used in equipment today. The same technology 70 years later. Go figure. I guess if it works it works.
My craft beer and I are much happier now with this all fixed.

Great to hear it worked out. Mounting was the same wasn't it? The unit bearing style of condenser fan and its mounting was used on so many units they are the standard style. More recent years there are more efficient styles and overseas styles that may be different.
