I made this short video to help people unfamiliar with these machines to identify them based on readily visible external features. My goal is to allow a non-technical person to be able to assist one of the more experienced people to confirm what type of unit they have. That will enable better help and troubleshooting.
There are three basic mechanisms. The DR machines are the earliest. They have one internal design which is similar across all the DR machines. The CA machines are entirely different from the DR machines and need entirely different troubleshooting. Finally, the CK and its variations are entirely different from the other types and have their own troubleshooting requirements. My hope is that this video helps you to be able to identify them by sight.
Sincerely, David

Thank you for making this David. It will help a lot of people. I’m glad you mentioned that some of the larger CKs don’t have the dome bump.
Now someone just needs to find an OC2!

Thank you for making this David. It will help a lot of people. I’m glad you mentioned that some of the larger CKs don’t have the dome bump. Now someone just needs to find an OC2! Thanks! I am glad you found it interesting. I would not be aware of the bump-less CK-3x series machines were it not for Travis describing them to me. I'm sure there is more that I'm not aware of since there were so many variations! I just wanted to cover the basics since I happened to have this more or less complete lineup in the shop at the same time. And yes it would be amazing to have an OC2 show up! I have a feeling that eventually one will appear. That, and a Frigidaire gear-drive dome-type open drive unit. If either or both of those show up, it would make me and many others very happy!

I’ve read about those gear drive Frigidaires too. So cool. Again, thank you for taking the time to make this while you had the whole lineup in your presence!

Thank you so much for posting this! It'll be nice to be able to identify the different monitor tops at a glance when scrolling through marketplace. Monitorhead.

Thank you so much for posting this! It'll be nice to be able to identify the different monitor tops at a glance when scrolling through marketplace. Monitorhead. Glad you found it informative! I am not a complete expert on identifying the exact years of every model, and the Form A, B, C etc. on the machines but I can usually use the traits shown in the video to find the overall family they are from. Now, you need to find a complete set of one of each type!
