Here is what I have as I write this. I have two in very good condition CA refrigerators with shelving and working lights. Both have burnet out motors, one bad starter switch, and one broken temperature switch, and both have burnt out motors.
About a week ago I cut one of the motors out and disassembled it and the compressor part was like new. The Stator (coil) was bad. I found a few places that will rewind the coil for it but I got prices any where from $600-1000 and beyond to rebuild just the coil.
The dilemma: Don't get me wrong I have liked and wanted the monitor since I saw one in a home when I was a kid I thought they were so neat looking. And to this day I still do. The thing is I still like to keep at least one of them. But since living on a fixed income the money to repair one is in short supply especially now days. So here is what I was thinking. I was going to install a new type compressor motor inside the dome and use the condenser and evaporator from the machine. But was told by a good source that people that have done it that way the modifications didn't last long without a failure.
So here is what I have planed. I would install an compressor that will use R-134 around a 1HP mount it under and up on the bottom, add a tube type flat condenser to the outside back and install a new type evaporator on the inside with a small fan, Add a capillary tube and filter. Very basic, and try and use the controller the frig already has to run it. Yes I would still need to defrost it , but it will still work for what I want it an still be one of the first things a person sees when they come into my house. I have always received compliments about it. It will look original from the front and sides and people at least most of them anyway will have no idea it's been modified to run again. I can do it myself for a little over $300. which is what I can afford. Thought's, suggestions?
Jack.
