Hello, I have an old GE barrel top refrigerator from @ 1920-1930.It is a CA-1-A16. It will no longer run. I have had several relays installed to replace the old one and even relay overload star capacitor combination tried with no luck. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks, Bob Thomas Greenville SC

Yours is a CA form A, which is from 1933. "Will no longer run" can be any one of several things. The usual is the motor remains stalled at startup and the overload trips. The most common cause of this is a build up of non condensible gases; likely if the fridge has never been worked on before. A characteristic of the methyl formate refrigerant used in these machines is that it breaks down over time and converts into other gases. In simple terms, these gases effectively block up the system and the compressor motor can't cope. Owners of CA machines have to purge these gases from time to time - how often depends on a number of things. Additionally, the oil heater may have failed which worsens the situation. First I would suggest downloading the service manual which explains the purging procedure (https://www.cool386.com/ge_service/ge_service.html). You will also need a .216 Bristol key to open the charge valve for purging (see here monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/1254/216-bristol-key). Also a multimeter or plug in power meter is required to test the oil heater.
