My wife won this beautiful machine in a family lottery. I am trying to get it back in working order for her without refrigeration gizmos. It runs quietly without cooling any. I have tapped on it a lot. I have purged it. I have gotten the compressor to warm up. No cooling. Purged until SO2 stench. What next? My in-laws started their housekeeping with this baby.

This family member ran until about 5 years ago when it began having a slightly different sound. It was unplugged and been awaiting our resuscitation.

The fellas here whom are most helpful will want you to post some pictures along with any name tag information. If the machine uses SO2 as refrigerant no purging is required as it does not run in a vacuum state. How did you purge it? You happen to have the correct Bristol key? Is there any heat rejection in the condenser when it is running?

Please do post some pictures of it. The CK machines are very reliable and once they stop cooling, it's usually going to require some internal repairs; unless you get lucky and tapping on the float valve solves it. You mentioned already trying this with no results, though.
More than likely there is a blockage in the lines near the float seat area, based on a wild guess from very little info. As you share more info on it, we can maybe have a different diagnosis.

A t30 torx bit fits the spline nut nicely. The compressor runs almost silently. There was no difference between ambient and condenser or evaporator temps until I purged a small amount of air. Then the compressor got warm but no variation anywhere else. Having technical issues uploading photos. I quit allowing bubbles through oil to escape when I detected that unmistakable odor of SO2.

If you tried purging NCG and got SO2 from the float chamber without that making the float open; you either have a total blockage, or the system is almost empty and has only vapor in it.
Here is a video where I address this problem on another CK-1 machine.
Hope this helps you.

Please post some clear pictures of the evaporator. All sides and angles especially where tubing connects.
