I've had my DR2 for about ten years, no problems. About a week ago it stopped cooling, was making a very low pitch squeal so I unplugged it overnight, plugged it back in and within minutes smelled an electrical problem. The relay/temp control box was warm to the touch and was clicking very fast, it's been unplugged since, where do I start? 1/8 hp motor

To be honest, that doesn’t sound good. Could be a shorted motor winding. You’ll want to take resistance measurements of the motor to ensure that everything measures ok. Doing a ground fault check on the motor winding is also a good idea. If you look in the DR manual here you will see wiring diagrams which show what wires power what parts of the circuit.

Those symptoms don't sound good, but it would be wise to go through the troubleshooting from the beginning.
Could you do this.... Unplug it and then take the cover off the control box. Switch the control to the ON position and then plug it in for about 5 seconds. Make a video of what happens in the box during that time. That will help me give you better guidance.
The squealing noise inside is worrisome and makes me wonder if a mechanical failure hasn't happened.
Also, are you proficient with a multimeter and taking resistance measurements? As ray said above you will need to check for ground faults as well as the resistance of certain components.
Sincerely, David

The relay's get hot then the overload wire turns red and it kicks off.

The relay's get hot then the overload wire turns red and it kicks off. Sorry I had replied to this yesterday but it didn't show up. It does sound like the compressor may be stuck, assuming the starting resistor is good and the contacts are closing for starting.

What's the procedure for un-sticking it?

What's the procedure for un-sticking it? Normally the DR series machines don't get stuck unless something has gone very wrong. It is likely going to need major repairs, such as opening the housing and rewinding the motor. Nobody will be able to troubleshoot without motor winding resistance measurements and some measurements and pictures of the control. There are many possibilities and we don't really have enough info to go further.
