Hi, just found this forum. I have a CK-2-C16 #6308599 that I've had 40 years and running continuously all over the US, Germany, Morocco and Panama (Military). Today I went to get a drink out of it which is what we use it for these days and saw where it had defrosted, and water was up to the rim in the drip tray I keep under the freezer. I thought it may have gotten unplugged, but the light was on inside, so I knew that wasn't the problem. I switched it off and then back on a few times at different intervals, nada...any thoughts? Looking at the type of posts on this forum I am pretty certain you folks know what you're doing with these great old refrigerators! Chuck in Alexandria, VA 1ck2c16

That is a beautiful example of a CK... and you even have the evaporator door! As for the sudden stoppage, that is most likely a problem with one of the electrical components external to the compressor; such as the start-relay or the control. When you tried turning it off and back on, was there any humming or signs that it was trying to start? Sincerely, David

David, crazy thing happened. About 3 hours after I'd turned it off and on a few times and nothing happened I turned it on again and it started right up. It's been running normal now for 48 hours. I just want to try and figure out now what made it shut down and defrost in the first place! Chuck

That almost sounds like the control is sticking. Just to confirm, when you turned the control on before and it didn’t start, did you hear any sound at all?

It does sound like something in the control is sticking; however there is also a possibility that the compressor start relay is not operating consistently. If the start relay fails to make contact, the compressor will draw too many amps, resulting in the control tripping. The control tripping requires the knob turned to OFF fully and firmly to reset. Because the overload trip function doesn't operate very often, sometimes it might take a few tries to reset it. If I were you, out of an abundance of caution I would inspect the moving parts of the control and of the relay. There are no electronics in either part so you can visually detect worn contacts. The moving parts often benefit from cleaning and lubrication as well. That will usually restore consistent operation. That almost sounds like the control is sticking. Just to confirm, when you turned the control on before and it didn’t start, did you hear any sound at all? Agree 100%! Sincerely, David
