Hi everyone,
Thanks for the information provided by everyone so far with my SO2 flat top. It's still operating well. I keep my eye on the local classifieds for older refrigerators. A unit that is identical to mine but branded Hotpoint became available. It was located not to far from work. I had several correspondences with the seller & tried to convince him to keep it. It is in his grandmothers house which is now being sold & it has no home to go to. His asking was originally $200. I was a bit cheeky & submitted a bid of $50 to him based on the pictures & of the understanding that the refrigeration system had to check out ok. I was told it had been running in the basement for decades with no issues; a positive sign. I went to have a look at it the other day. My heart sunk a little. The unit was not running and I do not think it had been for some time. Unfortunately somebody at some point in time turned it off without defrosting it correctly. The crisper drawer was full of water & there was more corrosion on the shelving & cabinet than the pictures revealed. I was disappointed. I checked out the refrigeration system anyway. Compressor ran very quietly, less noisy than mine. I could feel heat rejection from the condenser after about a minute. After about 3 minutes, the float finally opened with a big woosh and the evaporator started to cool. Ran it for about 10 minutes. Frost line seemed about right. All the interior pieces were there. I left the unit there but gave the fella $30 bucks for the 3 glass pieces and the crisper drawers. If anyone needs a few of these pieces, you are welcome to them, no charge.
There was excessive corrosion around the screws on the bottom bakelite trim piece. I have to assume the paper insulation is damaged due to the water. I originally told him I would take it off of his hands but it's more work than I was hoping to do. Unfortunately I am a man of my word & said I would come back for it if he can't find anyone who wants it before the house closes, even for a free keg fridge. I suspect I will be picking this up in a few of weeks. I won't be bringing it home as originally planned but will most likely leave it at work in our lunch room. Because of the water that was left inside for who knows how long, are there any steps I should take with it?
Apologies for the long spiel.
