One thing to be cautious of is a possibility that it's been filled with propane. Very important before you do any soldering on it. Propane has been used in at least three restored CK's that I know of, since it suits the P/T characteristics of the system better than the once common R12. I wonder if the guy you got it from was Mike Arnold www.nytimes.com/2004/07/15/garden/trade-secrets-if-the-shell-fits-fix-it.html I was also thinking Mike Arnold when he told the story.

Mike Arnold was very well respected and in some ways famous in the antique appliance circle. I sadly came into the game too late after he had passed on. I lament not being able to talk to him. If I were you, since there is no float valve, you will need to use gauges to see what the pressures are doing. I expect it has leaked down and needs to have a leak repaired and recharged. If you were inclined to, it can be shipped to someone for repairs. The shipping will likely cost more than the repair for this type of problem, but it may be the only way to get it fixed since so few work on them.

Thaks for all the help. I have not looked into shipping out of fear of reality of cost, but guess I will have to do that. Probably less to buy a whole unit that works and just use the mechanicals as my box is in great shape. Shipping cost for replacement will be equally expensive. I think there have been some CK's for sale, will also look into that.
I should be used to these problems as I live in an 1887 house and still use a 1927 Clark Jewel gas stove. Needless to say, my kitchen is very original, slate sink and all.
Again thanks so much everyone. If you know of a replacement unit, let me know.

It's frustrating when things go wrong with our beloved vintage things. Hope you are able to get it shipped down for repairs.

Shipping looks like 250 each way plus repairs. At the moment, wife not thrilled with that idea. Guess we will keep going to basement for newer frig for now. Maybe when that gets old, we can get back to ship and repair.
Again thanks for all the support.

David, looks like we will be able to have you do repairs, hurray. Will return to contacting shippers. I had asked that whole unit be shipped as I was not sure how to build something just for the motor and thought safer to ship whole refrigerator. What do you think? Apart it seems more delicate. We go away for the summer April 14 but are back occationally. Need to ahve idea of time to repair and get reshipped or if you can keep till fall when we return.

Jim You are probably right to ship the whole thing, cabinet and unit. I would be happy to hold onto it until you are available to receive it back home. It will probably not take a long time for me to repair it, but it should have a month or so of running-in time after the repair; to be sure it's not going to have additional problems.

Will be on hold for now. We are away till the fall. Had two more quotes, $1100 and $2200 for one way transport. Not a move in the right direction! At that, I can drive to Alabama, have a nice vacation and see part of the country I have not seen. time will tell. Still hope to get my beauty restored by you.
thanks again for your patience and encouragement.

Sorry to hear that they passed away. It would have been interesting to hear from him . It looks like it has had major surgery on it for sure. I agree on the fittings possibly leaking and being low on coolant . Out side air getting into these old systems is very bad , (corrosion )
