Thnak you John from Antique Appliances Georgia for your help. The tecnician checked de compresor it is running and so checked the refrigerating system and it is not working. I am now following your instructions and put the 100 watt lamp in the freezer are door closed and refri working. Waiting for 3 hours and the will unplug both the lamp and the fridge. Hope it works. The tecnician says if it does not cool it means de compressor is not working. He does not now what the capacity of the compresor . Does anyone know.? If the compressor is not working I would have to have it repaired .Don´t know what else to do.

Some of the mid 50's GE fridges had problems with the valves cracking and losing pumping ability. The capacity of the compressor is rated in "HP" or horsepower. There should be a name-plate on the fridge which tells you what the power is. GE used 1/4 and 1/8 HP compressors but you will need to share more info before we can tell you which you have.
