I'm in the middle of a complete rewire of my CK-2-B16 and removed the light bulb/bracket to discover the white gasket/cover/shroud around the metal socket base that has completely dry rotted. It is still in tact, but is more like alligator skin and doesn't look the greatest.
I read in one other post a recommendation about using a piece of bicycle tire inner tube to keep the socket from turning green, but I'm trying to see if anyone has any decent looking replacements or if it is best to just remove it and go without? I'd prefer to have something there if possible. I guess worst case is to just leave it there, since it isn't too visible behind the light bulb, but I'm hoping on finding something decent to replace it with. Thanks!

Originally, I think that was a white latex rubber sleeve which formed a seal around the neck of the light bulb. Over time it turns hard like you see. I haven't looked for a replacement, and instead put silicone dielectric grease on the bulb threads and inside of the socket. Cheap repair, yes, but it will do the trick. You might look for thin-wall silicone tubing in a laboratory supply catalog?

Thanks turbokinetic and joneske! I like the crutch tip idea. I'll give that a shot and see if I can get it to look close to the original. Worst case, I'll probably go the dielectric grease route.
