I found a GE pb6-40-a on marketplace. The porcelain enamel is in great shape. The motor starter is shot along with all the 80 yo wiring.
It has a chrome piece on the back wall with an "air filter" badge on it. What is in it exactly that filters the air?
Where is a good place to get a starter/overload? Are the originals worth tracking down or is there a modern version that will work?
I drove 3 hours to get it, the guy had bought it to fix up years ago, never got to it. I'm hoping to ohm out the comp motor this evening if I can find my meter. I'll add pics soon.

Ok, it ohmed out and fired up and cooled. I'm gonna rewire it, replace the start relay and I'll be in business. How do we add photos?

Glad it's working for you! There is an "add attachment" option on the forum for sharing photos. Be sure they are resized down to a reasonable size (150 - 200K) before uploading since space is limited.
There are aftermarket start-relay devices but most of them have certain limitations. They work, but you may find that sometimes the compressor takes more than one try to start.

Looking at the start relay that someone had taken apart, it appears to be in ok shape except for the contact on the start circuit arm. It's got about 25% life left and is worn at an angle from not hitting the stationary contact pad squarely. Is there a repair I can make on that contact? And then maybe find a cover and screws for it.

You'll need to use an ignition points file to clean up the contacts and make them reasonably square again. I rebuild the relays by taking apart an industrial relay and salvaging the contacts from it. The contacts and contact arms from the industrial relay can be repurposed, and soldered into the worn GE relay to replace its contacts. Some day I'll do a video about the relay repairs!

It's described on page 171-172 of the Scotch Yoke manual. Operation is really more of an odour absorber than a filter, and the owner is advised to heat up the carbon in an oven every few months to drive out the odour. Very nice CF by the way.

Found a parts fridge close by that had the motor starter/overload I need that was in mint condition. Got my new plug and wire I ordered yesterday. I gotta work the next 7 days but next week it should be ready to run.
