Anyone have tips for getting the old musty smell out of my newly restored CK? I've cleaned it several times including soap and water, vinegar, bleach, etc. I've also used trays of activated charcoal, baking soda, and stuffing it with newspaper for a few days. All of these help but nothing has gotten rid of the odor.

That's frustrating! Sometimes this happens when the fridge is closed up, powered off. Moisture is trapped and can't dissipate. I've found that when they are not in operation it is critical to leave the door open a crack so that air can circulate. If the door is kept closed for any amount of time while the fridge is not operating, it will continue to have an old musty smell.

I would have suggested activated charcoal but you’ve already tried that. Hmm, only thing I can say is to keep changing out the charcoal and maybe try different positions. One of my fridges has a metal tray with holes in it filled with activated charcoal. It works very well to remove odors.

I've seen battery operated ozone generators specifically made for putting inside refrigerators for this purpose. For example www.ebay.com/itm/143828262399Maybe worth a try.

I used the Arm & Hammer baking soda cartridges. The kind that are round and stick on. I didn't stick them to anything I just put 2 in the freezer compartment and 2 in the fresh food compartment. I did have to change them out a few times which took several months. But it did eliminate the old musty refrigerator smell that was in one of my Frigidaires. It had sat unused for many years before I bought it.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think persistence is paying off. The charcoal, baking soda, and stuffing with paper and cardboard are paying off. The smell seems to be much less. I guess when it sits closed for 7 years it will take a while to get rid of the musty odor.

Might be worth taking off the textolite panels. If there's odor in the paper insulation, it may help giving it an airing.
