Even though the model number was worn off, and there is no history or identification, there is progress in getting this unit back on line. The cabinet appears to be an older external latch style, the top appears to be a 37 CK ? but I am new to this so I'm not really sure. What I am sure of is the fiber board was trashed and the inside was pretty badly rusted.
So I ground, sanded, blasted all of the cabinet rust, filled the holes, made a few new screw backing brackets that had turned to dust.
Today was the time to do the motor. Since it is still working, I was concerned the aggressive exfoliation of the cabinet might not be such a good idea, toxic/rare gasses etc. So I took the chemical strip route. Very time consuming, but "revealing" Found at least two previous paint jobs, none of which were any where near as tough as the original layer, which seems to react more like epoxy than anything else.
So now it is down to bare steel (and a cool little copper cover for the float). It was in way better shape than I expected, so I was thinking of going with a deco top and just clear coat it, but it does have a few minor dings that I am not skilled enough to repair without filler...
So, next weekend it gets sprayed with an epoxy primer, a few coats of GE white base, then a few coats of clear. Should look better than new.
Then comes the hard part. Insulation and seals. I do not really understand how the no-ox-id, wax tape etc work, but clearly from the rust I removed the top seal has probably been toast for a while. I was hoping to replace with more readily available materials, so any suggestions for how to proceed are greatly appreciated.
