Hey Everyone! I just purchased a new to me D-2-A16. Gentleman said it wasn't running and it has some rust on the top from a water pipe leaking on it. I was worried it would just be an ice box if I couldn't get it running, but after some cleaning of contacts it fired right up and ran. I ran it for a little to see how cold it would get. I now have the top off of it and just read the ohms for the heater through the power plug technique (thank you turbokinetic ) that in the off position is reading at 400k off and so looks like I need to get a new heating unit. I also was able to find a tag inside that matches the model number (1496695) with a date of 1-27-32 (I noticed turbokinetic found in one of his videos). I am hoping this will run well all said and done as it is my first one and I gave the guy $40 for it when he was only asking $30 because I didn't have change). Trying to figure out where to link pictures to so I can send. I also took apart the handle because it had a lot of play and see a smaller broken spring in it and a loose metal bracket. Is there any how-to on rebuilding the handles? Thank you! Anthony

Hi Anthony,
That tag is fascinating (made out of paper?), I've never seen a one quite like it. In that era (1931, through the rest of the '30s), the first digit of the serial number typically indicated the year of manufacture. So "1" means 1931. I don't know the semantics of the date on the tag. Shipping date out of the factory?
Anyway, I love seeing cheap hard luck cases brought back to life.
I can't recall specifically if there are any threads rebuilding the handles, but I know folks have done that (and manufactured latch strikes, for what it's worth).

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the information on the year of it also!
Yes, the tag is made out of paper and was right were the heating element is. I just ordered one through Phoenix Thermal Supply for 24w, so I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival so I can run this thing for a good amount of time and see how well it works!
I'm hoping to find more info in the fixing of the handle. I have completely taken it apart and with all the little metal pieces that were broken and the smaller spring, I can't figure it out. I am curious if maybe someone took it off before and just rigged it to work.
