There are may be purists here who may be slightly miffed at this post, but I believe the spirit is good and correct.
I picked up a 1936 GE monitor top CK on the cheap about 3 years ago, rusty and alone at a junk shop and destined for the landfill.
The Methyl Formate had long since been removed from someone else's botched job of turning it into a regular fridge.
Since it was past a pure restoration, and being a fan of all things meats and cheeses, I decided to transform it into a curing chamber.
I spent the next 3 years, on and off (mostly off), doing a complete tear down of every part and every screw and learning a lot about the history and details of these machines.
I had all panels sand blasted and powder coated. I had to reinforce a couple of areas as they had were too weak from rust.
PhotosI re-chromed or polished all of the handles and hinges. I kept the scuff plates, but had to replace all of the screws and backings, also as a result of rust.
Did I mention it was rusty. Sheesh!
I then installed a small modern compressor, lights, a heating element, and temperature and humidity controllers (along with a humidifier and dehumidifier).
I'm new to the forum, so will post the quick before and after as my profile once I figure out how to actually do that.
