Hello! I just bought a 2 door CK-35-E16 and I'm trying to figure out where I can store it. I am currently rehabbing my house in Detroit, and since the kitchen will have to be redone sooner rather than later I need to set the CK aside until the kitchen is done. While the fridge runs great, I will have to do some paint stripping as well so I don't want it in the kitchen.
I have an enclosed front porch I am thinking of putting it in. Is it mechanically safe for it to be exposed to freezing temps over the winter? It will be turned off. I know people have kept them in sheds and garages, but I don't want to damage it before I even get to use it. My basement stairs are too rickety so the basement is not an option.
Of course, this is all a moot point if I can't convince a mover to get it to my house for me! I'm assuming based on this forum that the entire unit is about 600lbs.

Yes, it will be fine as long as it’s kept out of moisture.

The temperature won't hurt it, especially if it is powered off. What you need to watch out for is moisture from condensation and rain getting in it. I would keep the door blocked open about one inch, with a tarp over the whole unit.

Thanks for the input guys! The move went well - the only hiccup was when the movers had it on the dolly getting it up the stairs and the top halfway tipped out like I warned them it could. My husband helped the movers and grabbed it before it fell out. No S02 break and I turned it on after they left to check and it's fine. I'll wait 24 hours before letting it run for a few hours and testing the temp. It's pretty well protected from the rain, but I'll leave one of the cabinet doors open to prevent any moisture buildup. Pictures: imgur.com/a/TlUBndsThe shelves were lost during the previous owners move, but I do have the ice trays and 2 extremely heavy glass food trays. The rubber door gaskets are crumbling, the 2nd paint coat is peeling off and there's a lot of surface rust I'll have to clean up. The previous owner is an electrical engineer and rewired the fridge about 8 years ago and it turns on and gets cold no problem. In the picture - the thing hanging down is a spongy strip that was dislodged when the top tilted off it's base during the move up the porch stairs. Not sure how I'm going to fix it or move the top around honestly. Eventually this will go in my kitchen next to my 1939 Magic Chef oven and I'll post pictures when the kitchen is complete. |

Glad there wasn't a disaster with the top! That's probably the most important fact to convey to movers that are otherwise unfamiliar with the units: they're top heavy, and the tops just sit there by gravity. I tend to remove them when transporting to make it easier.
