Hi all Im new to the refrigerator restoration world. I have a GE Monitor Top- I believe the DR series -that is in horrible/non- functionally restorative shape. It belonged to my great grandfather and has been slowly rotting in an old shed. My goal is to preserve And restore the box for sentimental storage purposes. I have a question about the insulation in the walls and top piece. I removed all the insulation in the walls as it was exposed from the top, and a horrible crumbling mess. As I got into this I became concerned about the insulation containing asbestos? Ive read that some other refrigerator manufacturers did use asbestos in this time period. I haven't found anywhere that GE did use that in their insulation but maybe something called beaverboard? Just wanted some expert advice. This seemed like the place to ask. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks! Hi, the insulation is a cellulose material. No asbestos was used in these other than possibly a very tiny amount in the crankcase heater wiring. The cabinet insulation is not asbestos. Is the cooling unit complete? There is a chance it could be made to run again. Sincerely, David

Thanks David! I will try to figure out how to include pictures to show you. This thing looks to be in horrible shape due to rust - but I’m not an expert here.

This site is allotted a certain amount of picture space and unfortunately it’s been full for a while. So what others have done is post elsewhere and leave a thread to it here . It would be interesting to see just how bad your fridge is,it’s shameful it was left out in the weather to rust away! But hopefully it can be saved .
