Methyl Formate pics Good evening. I purchased methyl formate about 3 years ago for my 33 GE from GTI Laboratory in Houston,TX. They sell on Ebay. The bottles are 30ml and sell for $30.75 plus $15 shipping. No special container. I think they sell a larger bottle too. I read that methyl formate becomes highly flammable above 89°??....I recieved it packed in bubble wrap in a box...but put it in the fridge in my shop until I get ready to add it to the 33. No special requirements to buy....except they will not ship to a P.O. Box. You can post this info if you want. I can add link with pics if needed. Thanks.

This is good to know. I have been unable to get MF shipped from any chemical suppliers to my workshop because it previously had a trailer home on the property. That has it flagged as "Residential" to UPS and FedEx and I am going to incur legal fees to change that. The issue with the eBay sellers is the volume needed for a complete fill is quite large, nearly a liter if I remember. The cost would be prohibitive in small bottles.

Interesting to know, but it's a very expensive way to buy it. From memory, it takes about 1.2 litres to fill a CA, so that's 40 x 30ml bottles, at a cost of $1230. When I was buying it from Sigma Aldrich, the one litre bottles were $130 (Aussie dollars) and $45 delivery. The methyl formate used in a fridge must be anhydrous. There was a cheaper grade available that was not.
Methyl Formate starts to vaporise at around 32 degrees C, so for that reason when ever I was working on the fridges with them charged and open to the atmosphere, I did so when the ambient temperature was somewhat cooler than that (in the low 20's C). And, yes it is flammable - it burns with a yellow/green flame.

I'm going to be buying some from Sigma Aldrich in the near future. Current price for 1 Liter is $132.00 USD. Ouch. Last I checked i could have sworn it was under $100. I think i'm going to also try and recover the refrigerant that is in my CA and while its empty, do a capillary conversion. Maybe even send the door hardware to finally get chromed too. Gonna be an expensive, but thankfully final step in the restoration after the project being basically on hold for almost 5 years.

I've seem various "purity" percentages of Methyl Formate on the web and was wondering if there's any consensus on just how pure a CA needs since the 95% stuff is a lot cheaper than the 99% variety. I know Cablehack said it had to be anhydrous but I don't know how that translates to "purity".
