Since I recently learned about monitor tops, I’ve been wondering, with the top being a self-contained complete refrigeration unit, couldn’t you just pop a monitor top on a top loading wood ice box and there ya go vintage refrigerator? I was thinking you could use a FEA top and replace the housing with a wood box to match.

I think I have seen icebox conversions as you suggest in some ancient books, with a few manufacturers offering drop in refrigerating units. GE never offered such conversions, though wouldn't surprise me if it may have been done on a non official basis.

Back in the 1920s Frigidaire advertised this very conversion.

Back in the 1920s Frigidaire advertised this very conversion. Yes, Frigidaire and Kelvinator both offered those. The Frigidaire evaporator is more or less self-contained and only required two tubes to go between it and the condensing unit. There is no electrical connection other than to the condensing unit. A Monitor Top cooling unit would work, but would require the correct size hole cut in the top of the icebox. These are quite valuable now so that might be a questionable method. If you had a Monitor Top unit with a broken line that had lost it charge; you might consider separating the evaporator from the unit. Then you could build a short wooden base for the cooling unit to sit on; while the two lines went over to the evaporator inside the wooden cabinet.

My thinking was to use a top loading model, and simply unscrew the hinges from the top. They already have a conveniently similar sized opening
