It's a date!! I'm picking up my first CA this thursday. The cabinet is actually pretty good condition, it should clean up fairly nicely. The top will need a repaint and rewire, the heater is still good, not sure on compressor condition. The guy said it ran and he used it until it started shocking him. At that point, he cut the cord. Not sure if I entirely believe that it was still running, he had never purged the system. With normal use on an original CA, how long can it go before the compressor siezes? Funny story, the guy with the blue evap DR unit just texted me back and told me I could have it for my price. It's not going anywhere anytime soon, I think he's finally come to terms with that. Maybe a christmas or thanksgiving gig Here's a picture photos.app.goo.gl/hVvynhhES6nvXsEr6

Nice! That porcelain cabinet should clean up nicely.
Normally the CA's don't ground out internally. The shocking issue is most likely a cabinet light issue.
The guy was stupid to cut the cord since it's detachable at the relay.....
Hopefully the compressor can be revived! There are a lot of methods to try, so don't despair if it won't go on the first roll!

Here she is, finally loaded in the car. Figured out why they cut the cord, it's a later hardwired general electric relay. He said that it was his grandmother's who purchased it new. I did a quick check with a little bit of oil, and the system is still under vacuum, no bubbles emerged. Maybe that'll change when I cycle it some, I'm not entirely sure how that works. The porcalin is in good condition, but the inside insulation needs to be replaced. I might send the cabinet out to get a new porcelin coat, it's not in the best condition near the bottom. We'll see how expensive it is, but the legs definately need it. photos.app.goo.gl/Wijq218PRP2Xfp7o7

Interesting about the relay being changed out. Hopefully that doesn't bode ill for the condition of the unit. Interesting stuff!

Yeah, took the top off, flipped the cabinet upside down and took the legs off. Put it back on and strapped it on. It's a tight fit, but it works. We'll have to see about the relay, does anyone have a picture of an original?

Hi Zach, your relay should be identical to this one, but mounted on the back of the condenser instead of on the deck. monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/1516/seize-stuck-using-voltages-all?page=4

However, someone replaced it with a GE CR 1057 start relay.(mid 40s?) Must have been a GE replacement part because the securing bracket fits the spot perfectly? photos.app.goo.gl/QVc8t99rKriY92P7A

I got confused and must have had someone else's Google Drive folder open. Interesting modification for sure! Looks like either a factory modification or someone did a very professional job installing that.

Well, last update for today, I hooked up the unit and tried to run it, someone hooked up the wiring wrong and wired the start and run windings backwards. It didn't fire, I unplugged it and checked for continuity. None. I ended up ripping all the cardboard as well as the wet insulation out of the unit. There's continuity on both windings at the compressor, that's a sigh of relief, but the wiring is absolutely gone. Took the control unit out, snapped one of the terminals in the process it was so rusted to the plug. Add another thing on the bucket list to fix. Add a heater to the list as the wiring is hanging by a thread.

Thankfully, that type relay you have now is more than likely equipped with a built-in overload breaker. Hopefully that was effective.
Yeah, those all would need wiring by this time! hopefully it will be a relatively straightforward repair once you get into it.
