I picked up a CK-2-C16 several years ago, which served well as a beer cooler in my shop building. It always ran whisper quiet, even when first turned on. Then one day I noticed it wasn't cooling even though the motor was still runnng. I turned it off, let it sit for a while, turned it back on and it started cooling again. Then I noticed after running a few minutes I heard sort of a swish sound from inside the compressor unit, and then the sound of the motor abruptly changed (not louder, just different), and it stopped cooling even though the motor continued to run. I turned it off and on again several more times, and each time the same thing always happened.
I'm thinking a seal may have deteriorated and won't hold once the pressure builds up for a certain length of time. I don't see any easy way to open up the top to work on the motor or compressor, and in any case would prefer to leave working with sulphur dioxide to someone who knows what they are doing. I don't want to throw this thing away and I believe it could be fixed, but right now I'm using it as a storage cabinet, but need to do something else with it.

There aren’t any seals on these units. The whole thing is hermetically sealed. Opening one up is almost never necessary and is very involved and difficult. It sounds like a few things may be wrong. One thing that happens with these units is that oil gets into the evaporator and can’t get out. If enough of it gets in there it can prevent it from cooling. If even more gets into it the oil pressure operated unloaded can stop working causing the compressor to be able to do no work. That might explain the odd change in sound. We’ve found that putting a heavy load on the machine every once in a while can help prevent this problem. For your case I would put pans of very hot water in the evaporator. Let it sit for a while. Listen and see if you hear boiling coming from the evaporator. If you do, that is a good sign. Wait until the water cools off a little. Then take the pans out and try it again. This process should return the oil to the compressor. If this works I would suggest doing a few things. First, defrost the unit by turning the knob to defrost once the frost gets 1/2 inch thick. Then when you return it to normal operation freeze some trays of ice in it. Freezing ice in it every once in a while and keeping the evaporator defrosted should help to keep oil out of it.

Looks like I somehow managed to post this thread in the wrong forum. It should be in "CK / DK / LK / AK Machines"

I went ahead and moved the thread for you. Do the hot water treatment with the unit off. Then allow the evaporator to cool down. Otherwise you’ll put too much strain on the unit. It could probably take it but it wouldn’t be nice to it.
