Hi all Came home today and noticed my CK-15-16A was running, but had a slightly different sound. Opened the door to find it had defrosted! (when it was not set to defrost) Of course I panicked and thought the worst! I shut her off, and tried putting boiling water into ice cube trays, letting it sit. Did this a couple of times but no luck. Finally after sending panic SOS to David, I calmed down, left her turned off, emptied and cleaned her up a bit, and did nothing for a couple of hours. As one final try before going to bed, and while still turned off, I poured boiling water into a meatloaf pan and slid into the evaporator. As soon as I slid in, I heard a loader girgling sounds. Then I turned the compresser on and waited 5 min. Compressor felt unuaslly hot from the outside. Pulled the meatloaf pan out waited another 5 min and..success! A even frost..and seems to be cycling normally! So now that y'all have read this stupid story, my question is this.. Is this something that should be done occasionally just for good measure? And should G.E have provided metal meatloaf pans to do the job? LOL Thanks Stan

Glad too hear the hot water trick work for you! Most people seem to have to not do this but an occasional heat treatment might help some machines stay clear. Did you notice anything such as the frost line getting lower before it stopped cooling.

I honestly think that putting a decent load on these machines every now and then is a good thing. I think that freezing ice is a good thing to do in order to keep that oil from getting congealed.

My CA-2 sometimes suffers from this, but only in winter when its load is minimal, and it only happens once, if it does happen. This is the first winter it hasn't. Last couple of times it happened, I tilted the cabinet top in an attempt to get the oil floating up from the bottom of the evaporator. It seemed to help somewhat.

HI all I didn't notice the frost pattern prior to this. So far she's doing fine. Another member suggested the hot water trick at the time of defrost for good measure. It was a hot day the day this happened. Would have thought it would be more likely during winter? Who knows? This CK 15-A16 is perfect for my space, as it has a littke shorter cabinet and fits under a cabinet. The evaporator is the smaller narrow one that's centered.

Hi guys So.. Three days later it clogged up again. Did the hot water thing a couple of times and got her going again. I did put a little load in her by running with hot water pan in evaporator. I also tipped the machine while running (about two inches off her front feet) and let her drop. Don't know if that helped or not. Im wondering about freezing ice cubes as CKfan has suggested.. But not sure how that would help? Ckfan can you explain further? Also I've been running without the chiller tray under evaporator. I now have one under, but dose running without make a difference? (Only been using chiller tray during defrost)

Hi Stan,
Sorry to hear that it keeps happening to you. Does the sound change when it starts to defrost? It could be an unloader that is getting stuck. I just suggested freezing water since it puts more load on the unit. Running without the tray will only make the cabinet a little colder. It shouldn’t cause the issues you are having.

Ckfan Didn't notice any sound difference when it started to defrost.. Both times I was out, so.. And there is only I slight sound difference while compresser is running and not cooling. I was not as paniced this time, as I knew what to do. It's just a little worrisome while doing the process.. thinking to myself.. Is this really going to work? When I heard a little more aggressive girgling coming from the evap, I figured I had it! So far so good today??

That is really odd. Shouldn’t be doing it near that often or at all. It sounds like you have some issues with your evaporator clogging up for sure. I honestly have no idea what the fix would be for it other than opening the system up.

I honestly have no idea what the fix would be for it other than opening the system up. Several folks swear by Supco 88 oil treatment. I haven't used I personally, but others here have had great success with it. You'll need to use an oil injector to put it in, though.

Has it ever been used in an old SO2 system? I would fear it would break all kinds of funk loose. Of course if the system is healthy it shouldn’t have much to begin with.

Oil injector? Sounds like good material for David to do a vidieo! If supco 88 is applicable? So far so good since the last clog.

I put Supco S8 oil in the seized dr but it may not have helped. Windings turned out to be bad in this one. monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/275/seized-dr-2?page=3I also put in another that had a float sticking, It was one of the r124 Ginny pigs but I can't find the tread! The float never stuck again!
