Hi people retired refrigeration tech here looking for info on the compressor wiring as it goes to the relay board. The relay sits on the left rear corner. Trying to figure out common, start, run? Tried wringing out with resistance but there is a fourth wire off to the right. Would appreciate any help. Thanks Frank
Ps I've converted several of these to 134a with a comp tucked under the rear legs. Pretty easy to do. Anyone needs help with that give me a shout

There is/was an appliance restoration business that was doing that. The whole character of the fridge is destroyed.

Hi Frank, there are two separate cables inside the CA cooling unit which exit at the relay. There is one cable with 3 wires in it, and one with only two. The two-wire cable is the heater cable; and the 3-wire is the compressor motor cable.
The compressor motor cable will have two wires which always have continuity to each other. The third wire will be able to be switched off and on with the control at the front of the fridge.
Once you determine which is the Common wire, the other two are easily identified by resistance. Measuring from the Common wire, the lower resistance will be the run winding; while the higher resistance will be the start winding.
It is generally frowned upon to add external cooling systems to these machines and that path will not be well received here.
Have you seen any of my CA repair videos?

I understand the purest mentality when it comes to keeping it all original. The internal repairs most of you do is nothing short of amazing. The only tuck and fudge I do is with those with so2. That stuff is so caustic. Thanks again for your help

Frank,
FYI, you can use R124 as a substitute for so2. You can also use 152a as a replacement in some machines. I agree with you that so2 is terrible stuff, but once you evacuate it, it's gone and you can use something else. I'm not criticizing your past work, just pointing out what we've learned that might help you in the future. There are also refrigerants that can be used to replace MF in CA machines.

I agree about SO2. I have no sentimental attachment to it and have found the alternatives work as well or better in every unit I have tried them in.
Sincerely, David

Not a minifridge bolted into an extremely heavy cabinet with a dead top.
