I need to get some pictures up of it. The insulation on the cabinet looks fairly decent, although there's 2 small rust holes on the bottom of the unit. Thinking of putting in epoxy, but I'm not yet sure. It is the smaller 5 cu ft cabinet. It does rattle when powered up (heater is bad, as tested). The middle of the evap, all the way on the bottom, is the first to get cold after being on a few minutes. The longest I've kept it on was about 5 minutes (and only twice, until I can get a heater ordered). It's a neat machine, right next to my Soup Can.

Congrats! Hope your heater arrives soon. I'm having to fight the urge to run my DR until the heater order gets here!
My goal is to have a DR, a CK, and a CA for the GE fridge collection.

How's the heater working in the crankcase
Sincerely, David

To Montanadr1 - measure the resistance across the male leads on the back of your control - 9-11K ohms means you have a working heater. I don't have one, so I've only powered up my DR1 long enough to verify it starts to get cold (but after it sat outside where it was over 90 degrees, so somewhat heated already).

I need to take some photos of the nameplate on the DR1 I'm getting from the museum I'm affiliated with. The heater is definitely bad, but I fired it up - no loud noise, and evap started getting really cold, pretty quickly. The controls also looked pretty clean. And I even got a story on the unit - it was part of an adobe house the museum acquired with 12 acres when it was expanding in the 1960s. It ended up being drywalled over behind a wall, and when some of the house was condemned/starting to fall apart, it was rescued and put into storage, where it sat for 40 years. It wasn't ever really used after the museum's acquisition... until I fired it up. Needs a new door striker, but I still think it's a steal for $150, given how well it works!

Was it drywalled over so that it was hidden from humanity for a few years (or like Fortunato in the Cask of Amontillado), or drywalled as some kind of funky little built-in refrigerator?

Probably more of the latter. I got the story from one of the museum hippies (as in, used to have half naked women, booze and drugs at the train museum in the 1960s). The serial points to 1931, so assuming it had been used for say 35 years, would explain it's in relatively good shape, as it hasn't been disturbed much. Oddly, the compressor was set backwards on the cabinet, but all lines are intact. I see now how people refer to the use of sports tape, epoxy and white paint on the lines that go to the evaporator. Aside from wanting one more CK top, I think this DR1 (for now, anyways) will round up any future acquisitions.4

I technically have working examples of all three, but I'd gladly give up the CAs for another DR or two. After the same problem with both of my CAs, I probably won't acquire any more, unless it's a steal of a price and includes a porcelain cabinet!
