The original relay on my '50 Frigidaire, model DM-90P, gave up the ghost today. I have a NOS replacement but I'm not sure if I should use it. When you handle it, especially turning it, like in your hands, it rattles. Like something inside is loose or not connected. Is this normal? It's a MARS 81 part number 21002. I only paid $5.00 for it from a liquidator's inventory so if it is defective I won't be upset. I just don't want to install it and possibly damage the compressor. Thanks for any input on this! I really appreciate it!!

Didn't even think about that. Thank you!! Turns out there were two little metal nuts rolling around inside. There's cutouts on the inside of the back of the relay to hold them in place at terminals 1 and 2 on the bottom part of the relay. Everything else inside looks fine. They must have popped out of the cutouts during assembly when the cover was snapped onto the back. Looks like I'm good to go. I appreciate your suggestion very much!! Now it's safe to install!!

Jake,
You should be able to gently pry the sides of the case to allow the innards to come out.

I'm glad to be of help.... Now if you had hooked it up with the loose nuts it would have shorted out I bet...

It sure would have!! Thank goodness I checked here first!! Since I'll already be right there I'm going to replace the original power cord too. The cord is starting to pull away from the plug. So it's time for a new one.

Just got finished installing the new relay and power cord on the Frigidaire. It started right up and is running like a top once again! I had to tip the fridge to unclamp the old cord and clamp on the new one to the bottom. That gave me an opportunity to inspect the wiring which is still in excellent condition. Still very pliable and no cracks or missing insulation. The operation was a success!!
