I bought a mid 50s general electric upright freezer for my basement. when i was looking it over to buy i plugged it in and felt the coils start to get cold. So i bought it and brought it home(laying it on its side for a good 4 hours). i let it sit upright though it may have been tipped forwards slightly for 18 hours before using it. Now It dosent get below 14 degrees. It also makes gurgling noises sometimes. I think there is still oil in the lines because the cooling lines sit horizontally in a squiggly pattern under each shelf so it looks like draining would be impossible(even if you tip it back it would get caught in the curvy bits in each line). I talked to an appliance repair guy locally and he seems to think its the compressor. Whats strange to me is that the freezer cycles on and off normally.
this freezer has no automatic defrost and no fans of any kind. any help is appreciated

If it is cycling on and off normally I would think that it is a problem with the thermostat or a problem with the door seal or insulation. If there was a problem with oil in the lines you would know. The compressor would become very noisy.

Hey is this the same unit where you were having problems with things staying frozen in the door compartments?
Does it frost up all the cooling lines under the shelves? Could you post some pictures?

Haha ya its the same one, I wasn't sure if i should post a new thread or not. Theres some frost on all shelves but there is defiantly more on the top one. Yesterday I let it sit for a few hours off(this time I leveled it out first) and it got colder, now its at about 11 degrees. i should be able to post pictures when i get home. I also bypassed the thermostat that made it go abit colder.

The compressor would become very noisy. I checked the insulation in the door and it seems fine. I also lines the mating surface of the gasket with a sticky strip of foam gasket material. I also bypassed the thermostat and it got abit colder but not by much.
