Does the cover come off so the dent can be fixed or is it welded on the coils? On the CKs (and the CAs), the condensers on the top are plate steel, with channels for the refrigerant stamped in them. So there is no cover. If it is dented, you'd either need to live with it or figure out how to bend the metal back into shape without cracking or pinching off one of the refrigerant channels.

THANK YOU, That's what I needed to know.. I had a feeling that was the way they were made but since I have never seen one in person.. It's a very small dent and it is right where the switch is so there might be an open area there??

It's a very small dent and it is right where the switch is so there might be an open area there?? Depends. If the dent is between the refrigerant channels, then it is likely fine. Take a look at this thread. It shows a larger CK with a bullet hole in the condenser, and it is fine. The metal between the channels is just dead space for heat conduction/radiation. It's only the raised channels that are of concern. Take a look at the first two pictures here monitortop.freeforums.net/thread/521/cks-bullet-proof

Yes Sir that's exactly where it is right in the center. So fixing the dent should no problem.. Thanks

Now another question about a CK.. The machine works fine and had for years but some of the evaporator doen't frost up. Could it be the oil hardening and blocking it in places? I've read that in several threads..

Now another question about a CK.. The machine works fine and had for years but some of the evaporator doen't frost up. Could it be the oil hardening and blocking it in places? I've read that in several threads.. Depends on your definition of "frost up". If your door gasket is overly hideous you can get some partial thawing between cycles near the front. Or if you're keeping it fairly warm inside, or fairly cool ambient outside (like in a garage). I haven't seen oil logging being an issue in CK's except in cases of float valve crapping out. Then after repairing the valve the oil takes some encouragement to clear the evaporator.

I have experienced that issue with my CK. You could give it a heat treatment. Turn the machine off and put a pan of hot water in the evaporator. Let the evaporator get good and hot but not too hot. You should be able to place your hand on it to feel the heat. Then let it sit a bit and turn the machine on. It will then sound really loud and will be working really hard. It usually fixes the problem though but it will come back eventually.

Thanks guys for the answers to my question but it looks like the guy sold it or decided to keep it... If so that's ok it's not the only one out their and usually I'll find a better one for less money next time....
Back on the hunt... But at least I have a better understanding what I'm looking at the next time...

Yeah. That happens. I usually figure if it's meant to be, it will be. If not, then not. And like you say, the next one will be better anyway.......

A ck unit weighs more than an FEA. A CK is in the 160 lb range. Are you sure? It felt like the motor was at least that heavy. Lifting it up by myself onto the top of the chassis, it felt like lifting one of my Saanen does up that high (they're 150-175 pounds each). The chassis itself was heavy, but nothing ridiculous. Maybe 100-120 pounds?

But at least I have a better understanding what I'm looking at the next time... Like others have said, if it wasn't meant to be, it wasn't meant to be. My CK was free from another forum member, but I did have to drive all the way to Grand Rapids to pick it up, and it needs some TLC. The problem is the CKs are spread out all over the place, but it seems most of them are in the Northern US. I can also see how this can be an addictive hobby. Like my GE fans, I want 1 or 2 more CKs. Took a whole day to cool, but damn, this thing works better than my $2000 french door Samsung, and they're quiet, too!

I'm not exactly sure what a CK unit weighs, but 160 lbs is close for a CK2.
