I'm a lot more comfortable using alternative refrigerants in occupied buildings these days.
Death by SO2 would probably be preferable to death by lawyers......

Isn't methyl chloride great? Flammable AND poisonous! .. and the odor so sweet and innocent. Like a bunny rabbit of death. The apendix from the honkin' long document under "History of the DR" says methyl chloride is a "narcotic" rather than toxic. But at .09 Lbs in a 10x10 room, your refrigerator should make your whole family as well as everybody else on your street sleep like a baby. DIY surgery, anyone?

Ha, "The Dental Review" journal from 1906 states that it could be mixed with ethyl chloride and used as a local anesthetic, but was not recommended as a general anesthetic. DIY dentistry!

The Leonard is being picked up in CA tonight! Yay! Don't tell the Leonard what that old DR from Sacramento did on its way back; you don't want them to start a trend.

It better not leak whatever is inside it. That thing was a pain to find a reasonable shipper on. Everyone was asking for 500-700.

Let's hope the roads are better for this one! I don't think I'd be able to manage the logistics of securing a shipper and telling them what they need to do, I guess that comes with experience.

You have to try and be specific about what they're moving. You also have to cross your fingers and hope for the best. Uship is a fickle beast. You also have to accept in your heart that shipping will exceed the value of your precious piece of junk. This is costing $38 more to ship than it did to purchase. That's not a shippers fault, that's my mental problem in wanting a 1938 Leonard.

I got the Leonard. The shipper was a piece of crap and damaged it. Thankfully, Doug is going to help repair it. It's clear that this was a fine example of this model. I started stripping it down today to prepare to repair the damage. Ray and I both were very shocked and impressed to see no rust or water damage. It's going to get rewired, though the cabinet wiring was on fine shape. I did try to run it today. It turned on, but only the condenser fan would run. I couldn't detect that the compressor was running on even tried to. I am hoping that this points to a bad relay. I'll hook the compressor up to an annie and see how it behaves. Here are some pictures of the damage, the disassembly and the whole fridge prior to being abused.

Wow, was he at least sorry? It looks fantastic otherwise.
By the way, is there a nameplate or something that indicates what sort of refrigerant runs through it?

It's R12.
Ray has my annie, so further play will wait until after going to Ohio. The unit barely fits in a milk crate. It's gonna work, think happy thoughts!
