After reading the service manual I realized the CA compressor was not a "rotary vane" type pump but rather an oscillating rotary pump. What had me confused was there is no mention of an oil pump and yet they do say bearings are fed by oil under pressure. Patent # 1915097 may not be the exact pump but I have a feeling it has an awful lot in common with the CA one. The key in the slot is the oil pump so its actually two pumps in one! I also feel Patent # 2080236 shows a compressor like or close to the one used in the CA. The CA also mentions the use of an exhaust muffler.

I noticed that too - despite information previous to the proper service manual telling us it was a rotary vane type. The CA manual doesn't actually describe the full workings of the compressor, and seeing no visible pump in the diagram, I had assumed that the screw thread on the motor shaft was what circulated the oil, like an Archimedes screw. It does in fact seem the rotary pump patent 19150957 is the closest. Although I'd seen that patent before I never took much notice of it because the DR style casing and fins made me assume it was just a variant of that model - even looks like it might have a porcelain evaporator. If you look at the patent and real thing side by side, it looks like there has been some simplification in the production model. Note also the unloader is at the top of the motor for the production model.

I noticed when paying close attention to mine running this weekend that I think I can hear the unloader when it shuts down. Reminds me of the sound an engine makes if you shut it off with the throttle wide open.
There is a definite sound change when it shuts off.
