Do you ever leave the copper coils unpainted on a DR? If you have room and materials for a larger box I always allow 15 inches from the bottom edge of the top for evaporator clearance. According to the DR manual located in this section the largest of all DR1 evaps hung down about 13.5 inches and the 15 inch box gives you a little extra clearance. If you have the full model number and have seen which style evap is on the machine the manual gives you exact dimensions of the entire top! very handy for building the box! As for the the copper coils I have not left one un painted. Attached is a not so good copy of a picture of one jhigdon did that way. In my opinion it is the best looking DR I have seen to date! Not sure what you would have to do to keep the copper looking that good. Maybe jhigdon will chime in and supply a better photo and tell how to keep the copper so beautiful!

That blurry cell phone picture is a rebuild I did a few years back. The copper tubing was heavily painted and dented in a few spots. I just simply unwound the old copper tubing and sent all the parts to the blaster. Then after painting, we wound the candy ribbon with new tubing. Then sent back to the paint shop to clear coat. Unfortunately the motor windings failed after a year of operation, and was the last motor job I did with poly windings. It is now sitting unplugged waiting for me to open it up and redo windings.

John, the DR1 doesn't unbolt, so I guess you cut it open?

Yup. Gotta cut it open again. Except I have to be extra careful this time, so I don't scratch anything.

Thanks Allan for the valuable information. I'm going to build a 15" box. The current owner says "Just wrap it in bubble wrap, it'll be OK." I doubt it. 10 2" x 4" cut to 2' each should give me a 2' x 2' x 15" box if my math is correct. #6 commons should hold it all together. I'll let you know if I crush my evaporator and then I'll' ask you what I should do next. Until then, best regards, Thomas (vintage guy)

Sorry about the poor drawing but I am at Starbuks and this is all I have. I just run a band od 2x4's top and bottom and then line the inside with I/2 inch ply or wafer board. You can put ply on outside of 2x4 if it works better for you. Then I put 2 handles on each side to make it easy to tote. I just wanted you to know not to make the box 24x24. You need to have one opening dimension at 17.5 inch and the other can be 24 inches or larger. If you made it 24 x24 it would be too big. Hope this helps. And with that 17.5 inch opening, box will work on several models which is good if you get to be a sicko about these things like I have!

"One interesting story about the 5 1/4-inch floppy disk is how the size was decided. Engineers, Jim Adkisson and Don Massaro were discussing the size with An Wang of Wang Laboratories. The trio just happened to be doing their discussing at a bar. An Wang motioned to a drink napkin and stated "about that size" which happened to be 5 1/4-inches wide."
