I can't believe its been over a year and a half since I brought home 3 CAs and 3 FEAs from Travis's and still haven't played with a Ca much. I did run them all and found the one with the rebuild tag worked good, one is stalled and will not start and one had a bad float seat. I have been planning for a long time to do some experimenting with the soup can that has a bad float seat. So to that end I made it go AWOL from the rack in my storage bin and crammed it into my overloaded garage. First order business was recovering the methyl formate. I planed to force the MF into a recovery tank by heating the unit while cooling the tank. The tank, hoses and unit were in a vacuum still as all this was done, such is the nature of the methyl formate. To be sure the charging adapter and gauge set were leak free I first puled an vacuum on them to be sure they were not leaking. They held 700 microns for over 1/2 hour so I called it good. By the way I use o rings in the joints of the charging adapter. They work real good and are easy to find a replacement for. Just have to be sure they are tight. Here it is wrapped up with a heater blowing under there. Ice machine is off this time of year so mother nature had to provide the ice to cool the tank. Here I have a whopping 5.9 oz out so far. Altogether It took about 5-6 hours to boil all the MF out of the unit. Had to leave once to check a furnace and start over so not sure just how long. In the end the before and after weights of the tank say I got all most all of it. 2 lbs 11 oz heavier.

I hope you put that DR2 compressor in there.

I hope you put that DR2 compressor in there. If only it wasn't welded shut!

Did you use snow to get the holding tank cold enough? That is awesome! Hopefully you can figure out what is causing that stalled CA to not start. I will be interested to see the outcome of your experimentation!

Had to add legs to the shipping crate to get the thing up off the floor to work on it. Could be higher but at least now I am not standing on my head. Before I do too much I checked at the 120v going into the relay and found no shorts to the cabinet showing in the top. Looks like it might just be a good candidate to try to save. Here it is ready to cut the float seat out.

What will you be using as an expansion device?

What will you be using as an expansion device? Whatever I can make work other than a cap tube.

I wish I had a spare CK compressor for that.

I cut the float seat at 1/2" up and found I could have cut less off leaving more to solder to. O well there was still just enough to work with. I couldn't get a good pic of the needle but it clearly had a ring worn in it. The seat looks to be pretty ate up also.

Very interesting! I will watch this space to see what kind of restriction device you decide on.

Wow, Why does the needle guide look black or silver-ish!?

Wow, Why does the needle guide look black or silver-ish!? Seems to be a bit dirty inside, tube was the same way. I will probably wish I had added a filter drier to see if the MF eats the desiccant.

I had been told in the past any desiccant should be fine with methyl formate, but you know how that works. You never know if what you've been told is actually true until someone actually tests it. My yellow refrigerant hose sure doesn't like methyl formate. Or rather, my nasty looking brown brittle hose. I'm honestly excited to see what you come up with. I'm betting a CA can compete with a CK's cycle times with a better expansion device.
