Hi, I talked my sister in law out of a monitor top refrigerator that had been in her garage for years. (at least 12 years) not running. It has double doors and from reading on here I think it is a FEA. Has a square top, I plugged it in yesterday and it runs! Frosts up very fast. Is that normal? From the numbers on the motor it was made in 1946. I finally found the serial numbers on the cabinet and determined it was made in 1945. Is it possible? I thought the monitors were all made prior to that. Any help will be appreciated. Judy

Judy, I am new on here but I think I can answer some of your questions. Others will probably chime in too and correct me if I say something that is incorrect. The refrigerator is actually two components. First, the cabinet, and second, the refrigerating machine that sits on top. The machine includes the cold part (evaporator) inside the refrigerator too as it is all once piece and can be lifted off of the cabinet. The FEA machines were a replacement unit for the monitor top and were made after the monitor top went out of production. I believe that they are a post WWII product and mechanically are closer to the GE space saver models of the late 40s and early 50s. When you say it frost up quickly, it is normal for all of the little "freezer box" inside the refrigerator to get freezing cold and form a layer of frost. It stays frozen at all times except when you defrost the refrigerator. This little block of "ice" is what keeps the fridge cold. Now, if you are saying that it forms a thick layer of frost and that it builds up very quickly, this is not normal. It most likely is caused by bad door seals that let air leak in and out of the refrigerator. The humidity in the air turns to frost when it comes in contact with the cold evaporator.
Hope this helps.....

Yes the square tops were replacements for the round ones after the round ones were no longer made. As far as we knew after WWII is when the square tops were made however I have two square tops with controls made in Jan 1944 and Jan 1945 so I would say they started making them before the end of the war. The square tops are very reliable. The fan is what goes out the most and replacing it is covered here on the forum. Relay, cold control and wiring are about all the other things that will ever go wrong if the evaporator coil (frosty one) is stainless steel.

I have the sides and doors off now. I found out that I can remove the front yesterday to refinish it. Can I take the front of the doors off to sand blast them and paint? Thanks

Does anyone know what kind of wood was used in the doors? Some of my wood is unrepairable?
